Just finished lunch up the street from work and the car won't start. It won't start in N either. I have bright lights and not even a click from the starter. Do you think it's the starter sitting on a bad spot on the copper armature that has a worn spot ? Some days it started as if there was a bad spot with a little hesitation then it would start. I haven't time to **** around with it so I'm having a garage tow it to their garage.

Car was towed to the garage and the guys were hooking up the test equipment and they tried to start it and it fired up. What the hecks up with that? They said the starter on those cars need the exhaust dropped so wait for it to die again, maybe I do have a bad spot on the armature.

Mine did that when the starter was going out. I would pull into a gas station, fill up and no start. Usally waited 5-20 mins. and would crank right over. Dropping the exhaust... I dunno

It is easier to install one without the crossover pipe in place.

Okay much easier to install. ;)

Anyway next time it happens keep a hammer in the car and give it a few raps on the side of the motor, black part, not too hard and not too light.

Might start quicker for you, I'd get a new one ASAP.

How many miles and years on it?

If it's not even clicking, then it's most likely the solenoid; not the starting armature. GM never did figure out that bolting the solenoid directly to the starter, RIGHT UNDER THE HEADER, was a bad idea...sheesh...

150k and the original starter/sol
Wish it as as easy as my 70 Z28, that's a 15 min job to remove.

Mine only made it about 144K or so. ;)

Same thing solenoid not the starter motor itself.

Hammer worked for a couple of episodes however.

Died twice on different days in the same Post Ofiice parking lot so that was it for me, last straw.

Bought a remanned Bosch for $68 including core charge, I think there's cheaper ones out there, and of course a lightweight one would be a good addition as well.

Not worth trying a new solenoid on the old motor if you only want to get under the car once to do the job. ;)

And you will only want to do it once in your driveway. :)

i still have the original starter on my car...100k miles and 17 years later it was cranking with no problem...hell i even crank that thing for 30 seconds at a time once and a while when either the car has sat for more than a few weeks or when i have done engine work and had to drain the oil...

salvageV6 has the right idea - use a hammer on the starter.
Rebuilt lifetime warranty at Advance cost me $40.
You might consider one of the lightweight gear drive starters at this time. When mine went out, I didn't have my Silverado & HAD to get it running immediately.
