Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and get my spare tranny rebuilt for use in my daily drive.

Here's a list of issues with the current tranny - Is it salvageable? Can I make these repairs w/o getting the entire unit rebuilt? It was rebuilt by a "novice" so to speak ~3k miles ago.. I have tinkered with the TV cable incessantly, no leaks, fluid is clear and unburnt

1. Won't go into 4th gear w/o slightly lifting throttle.
2. Won't shift at all @ WOT - hits rev limiter (scary)
3. ECM doesn't report it being in 4th gear when it IS in 4th gear (Turbolink)
4. Lately it's making a grinding sound when put in gear.
5. Torque converter won't lock until 65MPH - even though ECM requests it @ 45MPH (Jim Testa chip)
6. Might be me, but it feels like it's slipping.

Shifts well during regular city driving, shifts get sloppier as RPMs and boost increase.

Thanks in advance..

Mark S.

I would start by getting the pressures checked even if you have to pay to do it, that will tell much more than words or descriptions.

Hey hottogo, are you affiliated w/ bruce, I see your in joliet. Just wondering. and if so when its time for me to get my trans done will all the same prices be the same thats on bruces website. thanks. Ps how much for a shift kit.

Doh! Post Hijack! :)

I understand the need to know pressres, but is there any way to somewhat diagnose the above issues w/o pressures? Are they all caused by low pressure?

someone familiar with these transmissions could probably give you more info by a road test .your descriptions seem to point to several different places.if you are unsure of the transmissions sbility to hold ie low pressure stall test the car at full throttle in reverse and drive and note maximum attainable rpm .then install the pressure gage.this is manditory. if i went to a doctor and he told me i had low blood pressure w/out installing the machine on me i certainly wouldnt believe him.in the real world of diagnosis there is a set procedure for gathering information which we then review and furnish a correction for.there is no other way.this makes the cause of the problem easy to find w/out wasting unneccessary time, money aggravation ,frustration ,aggravation ,frustration, aggravation and frustration.in the long run those who use this procedure will be able to cut diagnostic time shorter by having gathered much more information leading them to the root causes of transmission malfunctions faster.

procedures

You have it right Chris. You will save money by having it diagnosed first hand, rather than start throwing parts at it by recommendations from past experiences on here or anywhere. That is precisely why the doctor tells you to come in and get checked prior to him issuing meds. You can't fix what you haven't properly inspected for cause. See a qualified tech, have it inspected properly and find which way he/she feels you should go. Will cost, but not nearly as much as just tossing parts at it.

Bet ya understand he need to know pressure even more now..... LOL! ;)

As for them all being caused by low pressure.... well 9 times out 10 most problems unless it's a break are pressure related and all of yours except maybe the grind are or could be pressure related. WOT upshift delay is most likely gov. pressure problem but may be line bias or even pump slide spring weak... see this is were press. readings would help. :D

please post results.we need others to learn from you guys doing your part.get the gages hot .

I can install a guage - do I need a tranny-specific pressure guage? What ranges do I need to cover?

any quality gauge should work, liquid fill is best, you need a minimum of 300 psi.

300 to how much? It seems my problem(s) are due to low pressure - but I want to use this gauge on a healthy tranny in the future as well..

Thansk for taking the time to help, all of you guys! :D

your never really gonna see more 320 psi. on these trannies.

Excellent. Although I am getting my spare rebuilt for use in this car - I will try to get pressures asap - maybe help someone else too. :D

I would really like to understand these more.
