Ack !!! I'm stupid

Ok so I had some problems last fall with my car backfiring so I decided to fix it. I never could figure out what was wrong, but eventually it just stopped running at all.

Yes, I'm not much of a mechanic but you know how it is. So I try all winter to get it running, no luck. My cousin has been working on it for the last four months pulling his hair out (what's left ) with no result.

Today he emails me that it's running. ?!? Huh?
What was wrong with it? Apparently somewhere along the line I removed a fuse and didn't replace it.

Now if I can only figure out why it was backfiring...

Which fuse did you pull out?? And what kind of sick person are you to send your cousin on a 4 month wild goose chase.

Was it the injector fuse? Why would you pull a fuse and not replace it?

Bought a 86 GN with the factory security system. As soon as I got home with it, I started to push and turn all the switchs like a little kid. For some reason I forgot that the last time I was in the car that I rolled the int. light dimmer smitch down. After repalcing the crank sensor and a lot of cussing I called the org owner and now he tells me.

LOL... Andy loves me so he dosn't admit that he has a problem with it. Even though I'm a HUGE PITA. Apparently it's a fuse in the wire going to the computer (he thinks) Honestly I don't remember. It's been a long time since whenever I did it. I suppose I'll find out just what it's to if I ever get back home.

Why would you pull a fuse and not replace it?

I have NO idea. Strange things happen when you can't sleep at 3:00 am and decide to work on the car in two feet of snow.

I got a funny story too and my friend will get a kick out of this when he reads it.


When I was 18 yrs old I wanted a car for fun. I wasn't Rockafeller or anything so I found this Plymouth Bevedere convertible. I think it was a 67, can't remember right now I am drawing a blank. let's just say it was a piece of junk. The roof was a mess, the interior was worse and if it stopped running I could play Fred Flintstone because it had no floors.

Well, I get it home and my friend (Steve-a.ka.-SLZ) who is into Mopars came to check it out. There was a wire hanging from under the dash and you had to touch it to some metal on the dash when trying to start the car because it had some kind of grounding problem.

Steve and I couldn't get the car started no matter what. It turned over but just wouldn't start. So, I thought it had a fuel problem or something. I took the carb off the car. Took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together and back on the car. Still would start. After a couple hours of working on it Steve turned it over and he hit the wire at the same time and the thing fired right up. We still get a laugh out of that every time we think of it. That car was a lot of fun though.

the interior dimmer light switch is linked into the security system? is my 87 GN that way too?

Neil, they might be the same. I really didn't like the system because it would go off for no reason at 3 am. I ended up unplugging the horn because of all the false alarms. Runnning out in my shorts and a baseball bat. Turn your dimmer down and see if it fires. Most of your expert car theives know this already. I put a kirbans steering colum(sp) lock on it and a hidden fuel pump kill switch.

unless i am missing something mine doesnt work like that. i just turned the dimmer switch down and it fired right up.... but i do have that factory security where when you lock the doors, and open it any other way than using the key it flashes the lights and honks the horn and wont start until you unlock the door with the key...

oh well...

Must be a 86 option or previous owner rigged it that way. Sold the car 3 ago.
