Hey guys, I have been doing a few WOT 3rd gear pulls with my car. I'm running a TT 5.7 chip and 60's, about 15 to 16 lbs of boost on Sunoco 93. Chip is burned for 93, 20 degrees timing 1st and 2nd, 18 in 3rd. At the start of the pull, the AEM reads in the 11.5 range. As the pull continues, the numbers will jump between 11.5 to as high as 12.0, then as I get closer to the top, it will settle around 11.1 to 11.2 to 1. I went into the chip, and richened up WOT for all 3 gears less than 1 percent. I took it out for another WOT blast, and the AEM starts out the same way, but now settles in the 10.8 to 10.9 range. During all the runs, I am picking up no knock on the Scanmaster, or Caspers knock gauge. I actually have yet to see either the gauge or SM pick up ANY knock, even during a shift. I just replaced the original knock sensor with a new one from Caspers. Any thoughts on the WB readings?

Does you slightly lean spike occur at the shift? Like mine?

You know lean is MEAN as long as there isn't any knock!! You are surely safer at the 10.8 10.9 range.

Dave, this is not happening during the shift. I am in 3rd the whole time.

Mike, lean is mean, but I want a safe tune. It's a street car, so if I give up a little power to be safe I can live with that.
I just replaced the knock sensor, so I will have to take it out for a ride and see if it still picks up no knock.

On a non alky car running at that boost level you would be fine at 11.1 to 11.2 If you want to play it safe and don't mind giving a little power your good to go.......

Hmmm, what exact procedure did you use to install the knock sensor? IOW, did you use any thread tape? What did you torque it to?

Dave, the sensor already came with a reddish color sealant on the threads. I did not use any additional thread tape. As for how much torque on the sensor, its hand tight, no ratchet used.

Nick

Hand tight, the sensitivity would be very low. It needs to be torqued to 14 ft/lbs.

Start the car and run it around 2500 RPM and have someone tap on the back of the block and see if it retards timing or shows up on the gauge. If you have a gauge with the key on only, you should be able to tap fairly hard on the back of the block with an extension or ratchet and get it to show up on the gauge to see if it works.

OK, knock sensor is now torqued to 14 ft lbs. I will test it out sometime this week and report back.
