My Progressive Alky Kit turn on point is at 10 pounds. Is this to low? When I am just running straight pump 90 I dont see any knock until 15 pounds with alky off.

I always seem to get a black puff of smoke (rich) when I spool. Could this be due to the alky coming on too soon.

I have mine come on at 4-5 PSI...I see no black smoke and the alky is barely spraying. My LED doesnt turn green until 10 psi so I figure anything under 10 and it should be fine. Mine runs great and I have no knock.

Hummm...

It just seems their would be no need for Alky below 15 pounds or so?

Unless it was nessesary to start dropping cyl temps before the knock occurs?

True but I do it just to get the alky flowing. It is barely even spraying..Usually the only time I hit 4 lbs is on the way to max boost. It just gives a little cushion for it to catch up. This is the whole advantage about progressive...You do not have to have it spraying full at 5 lbs.

GETR done!
That Neon is waiting for a piece of the TR!

(Now back to regular programming)

If the alky starts at 5 PSI, at 20 PSI you will have X amount of alky.
Now, if it turns on at 15 PSI, at 20 PSI, you will have what you had at 10 PSI in the example above.
Of course, you can adjust to get enough alky, but it comes on pretty strong that way.

If your car has some "lag", you can increase the turn-on point.
Just from personal experience and reading a lot ................

The system is started early to get alky flowing into the motor before its needed. This way it can curb detonation before it starts.

See your motor knocks at 16 PSI for example.. if you start to spray at 16 PSI.. you will knock until the alky hits the combustion chamber. So by starting early, you have octane in the chamber for when you need it.

The latter you start it.. the more chance of not having enough time.
