I was told by a few driveshaft shops that you can't use a transbrake with an aluminum driveshaft. How true is this as i see alot of mustang sites using it all the time, even Cal hartlines car has an aluminum shaft? They must be safe if they have holding up in 8 second cars?

From what I understand there is a definite ceiling for aluminum driveshafts. I think I read 800 HP somewhere. Check with the manufacturers. You might want to think about going chromoly. Or, if you have the bucks, carbon fiber. I hear that if you have a carbon fiber driveshaft go on you, it shreds and does far less damage to the sheet metal that other driveshaft types.

I dont think i will go over 800 hp, i hope:) Some shop is offering my a 3.5 dia 6061 . aluminum .125 wall shaft with 1350s eries u-joints for under $300. It sounds like a good deal to me, but not if it is going to fail. Just trying to figure out which route i should go with this. The shaft is only going to be about 36" long, which i heard makes it stronger. Thanks for the tip.

There is a big differenct betwen a 6061 shaft and an MMC/MMX (metal matrix) shaft that some guys run. The 6061 shaft is not near as tough.

With a shaft as short as yours ( sorry!) the weight difference between aluminum and chromemoly is far less anyhow. Why take a chance when the manufactures tell you it's not safe?

Hartline did tear up his aluminum one last time out.
It was from the mid 90s though

I tore up a 3" alum shaft a few years ago, ripped it in two, and was only running mid 11's at the time. Have a 3" chrome moly now with no issues and about 600 passes. 3.5" would be stronger but I just dont trust alum shafts anymore

I guess it would be safer to go with chrome moly in the long run, thanks.

I'm running a 3.5" mild steel shaft. My driveshaft guy insisted I wouldn't need chromemoly in my application. Still, I wish I had gone chromemoly.

My driveshaft snapped the weld at the front yoke when my ring & pinion broke and locked up. The driveshaft is undamaged and will be rewelded and reused

From the specs online, the 3.5" MMC would seem really difficult to hurt.
I am considering this DS for my GN this summer.

4" Inland AL driveshaft here.

My 3.5" made about 50 high boost launchs (20+ psi) before breaking.
