they are making money off you some how- they don't just "give" away 6% because they are nice.

They make money from the $75 yearly fee and I'm sure they hope I will get in the habit of using it for all of my purchases, not just for groceries and gas. Plus they get paid from the retailer when I use it for the groceries/gas too. I pay my cards off every month, but if I didn't they can sock it to me with interest charges/late fees. Here is my "secret"....I have a Chase Freedom card and a Discover card. They both give 5% cash back in different categories which changes every quarter. I write out the categories on a little piece of paper and tape it to the cards. Then I know which card to use that quarter. But neither gives 6% for groceries, ever. The Amex card has a little twist to it. It actually is a credit that comes off of next month's bill, so apparently you have to keep using it to get the credit.

I have an AMEX Blue Cash that gives dollar credits . We use it all the time and get about $300/year back. You get more on gas and groceries at dedicated stores but general stores like Walmart get a reduced rate. No fee.

If you're disciplined enough to always pay off your cards and never carry a monthly balance then having a card that works for you is smart. It gives you buyers protection, it gives you a nice monthly statement that is easy to tell where your finances go so you can budget better, and there are cards that reward you for using them. Also it helps your credit rating.

We choose a card that gives up 6 Points per dollar spent to apply for free hotel rooms since we like to travel . It works for us.

The poster who thinks its a bs deal doesn't realize card companies also make money off Merchants so they encourage people to spend regardless of account balances.

I've compared points cards and while I am no expert I don't think you can beat 6%. You might want to calculate how much you spend to earn a point and how many points are needed for a hotel room. I belong to Trip Rewards. Not a credit card program, but after so many stays at a hotel in the program, you earn a "free" room. They increased the # of points needed for a room to so much that the program isn't any good now. I think the La Quinta program is better. I never stay at expensive places like Hilton but they have a program too.

If you are disciplined using someone else's money for free is a no brainer as well as cash back cards. I bought my TV and all appliances on 24 mo same as cash. Divide total by 24 there's you minimum payment. Have an amazon card(love that site) gives points towards purchases, citi dividend cash back card no fee and $300 year cash back limit.
