An '87 GN with a one-legged rear?

I spotted an '87 GN for sale near me today,so I stopped to take a look.

To my surprise,it didn't have the G80 (?) rear end. I even saw a copy of the cars original window sticker. Has Astroroof,high end stereo,etc. No limited slip!

The owner complained it can't get traction. Well... Maybe because it has a one-legged rear end and Cooper Cobras on the back? lol Even my Olds Ciera can spin its Cooper Cobras.

At least we know the car has never been raced.

I thought every GN had a limited slip. Apparently not.

Nope, my friend had an 86 that was a low option GN and had no posi. My T didn't have it either. One of the first things I had done.

G80 was an option on all regals (except GNX) until the extended production run of 1987 GNs (after sept 1987) when it became a std feature but they also increased the base sticker price

Yeah if I remember correctly the last 10,000 GN's all got a posi rear end. ?

Mine didnt have a posi. It was an 87 GN also. But they came with aluminum drums without the G80

So let us know if you have the aluminum drums as mentioned above. Hey on the bright side you're less likely to fishtail and wrap it around a tree with open rear.

I thought you couldn't get aluminum drums on a GN. Mine came with G80 posi and it was built 5/87.

It seems to be a pattern that only the peg legs came with aluminum drums.

Yes the way I understood it the posi cars had cast iron ( heavy duty service) and the open cars had aluminum drums trying to squeaze any CAFE points they could get with weight reduction. I don't think it was GN or TR specific except that as noted in the extended build out you could only option in restricted ways as the G car was phasing out. This is not to be confused with the bumper reenforcements that were GN steel/ TR aluminum if I'm correct. Always learning more about these cars as I forget stuff at about the same rate. It's not as if the open rear only applies power to the right rear. Its that the prop shaft torque to the rear axle wants to take weight off the right rear tire making it the smokey one. Once it is spinning (presenting less rotational resistance) less power can go to the left rear by default.

I believe the we4 may have came with aluminum drums. Someone else can confirm. I also like how people think that an open rear doesn't send torque to the right wheel. That is completely ridiculous as you've stated. The power applied is equal till one spins. If the rear had equal down force on both sides of the axle the fact the rear is open would have zero effect on traction.

84 GN came with aluminum drums and a peg leg, really it only needed posi in the snow..... ha ha got caught in a storm with it once... not fun.

My 87 GN came (off the showroom floor) with an open rear and aluminum drums. Second thing I did to the car after a chip was have an Auburn posi put in.
