I need to get my BRF 2004r trans overhauled. It shifted VERY firm-HARD would better discribe it, none of the classic "slippage" but fluid is burnt and there was a fair amount of clutch & "fine" glitter in the pan with the gray mush on the magnet.
My current performance goal is 11.50, as I have no intention of a roll bar. I would like the trans to live at this level at a minimum, high tens would be a nice insurance buffer if costs are not that much more-but thats not the goal.
The car will be using both the radiator and a external trans cooler. Stall converter will be in the 2800-3000 range. Trans was said to come from a "9 sec GN". I would have to have seen this to believe it of course. Regardless, it appears to already have a shift kit in it (by the way it shifted), and a brass tag attached to the valve body. I don't remember exactly what it says, but something like a reverse fix? Reference to Guppy, some guys name and it was patent pending. (Anyone know anything about this?)
The budget on the car has already been exceded before this can of worms got opened. I have access to good trans guys (I work for a GM dealer). They currently do modern trans work on a regulator basis, but have been around since the days of the 200R4's and Turbo Regals.
What I am looking for, would a standard overhaul (like using CK's kit maybe, with book/manual of course) work for the 11.50 range, or would other hard parts be needed? When the trans is opened up, is there anything to look for to see if any upgraded/billet hard parts have already been installed? (In case is was actually built for a 9 sec car).
Again, surviving @ 11.50 is a must, high tens if costs are not much more.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice.
