One of my cousins has a Chevy Caprice that was a Mo State Trooper car.The emission sticker says 1990 and for use in Canada.How do I identify the year of the car from the vin?Did these cars use 200r4s or 700r4s?Would this be a good tranny to use?Thanks in advance!

Eric

info

According to my transmission parts catalog the caprice is as follows;
74-76 = 400/375
74-84 = 350
78-87 = 200C
81-89 = 2004R
82-93 = 700R4 (4.3L/5.0L/5.7L)

Unless it has been replaced. In the US 10th number is the year - a 1990 should be an L. 8th number is engine size etc...

Thanks!Any way to tell if it's 200 or 700 from up top,if it's not a '90?It was dang cold in Mo when I was there last,I hate to have to jack up the car and crawl underneath.:smile:

Answer

Not really. The 700 pan is more square with one side slightly longer. It also has a removable tail shaft.

The 2004R in 1990 would definitely be a multi-bolt pattern trans. That means if you feel back there where it bolts to the engine you will find bolt holes and flange extensions sticking out into nowhere where it bolts to the engine. The 700r4 is a Chevy only bolt pattern so it will match the back of the block perfectly. No unused bolt holes.

I doubt you have a 2004R in a caprice. The only 2004Rs in 1990 to my knowledge were used in the B-body wagons and they were behind the 307 Olds engine with a computer controlled quadrajet carb. 90 was the last year for them, then they were discontinued. Every 305/350 Chevy in a B-body non-wagon car that I have seen had the 700r4. Only the Olds engines got the 2004r.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!Theres a post just below 1Burban,he has a '89 Caprice with a 305/200r4 combos.He told me the 350s came with 700s and 305s were with 200r4s.Now I'm hoping for a 305.....................:biggrin:
