I need to do a timing belt and need the step by step instructions. any do on on this type of car 3400 motor. and are basic hand tools all thats needed. thanks.

a 2002 impala doesn't have a timing belt with a 3400 motor.
Did you mean timing chain?

Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement

Tools Required



J 5825-A Crankshaft Gear Puller
J 38612 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer
Removal Procedure



Remove the engine front cover.
Place the #1 piston at top dead center (#4 firing position).








Align the mark on the camshaft sprocket (4) with the timing mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener (1).








Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
Remove the camshaft sprocket.
Remove the timing chain.








Remove timing chain dampener.
Important: If the sprocket does not remove easily, lightly knock the lower edge of the sprocket using a plastic mallet in order to dislodge the sprocket.









Remove the crankshaft sprocket using the J 5825-A.
Installation Procedure









Install the crankshaft sprocket using the J 38612.
Apply prelude GM P/N 1052365 or an equivalent to the crankshaft sprocket thrust surface.








Install the timing chain dampener.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.



Install the timing chain dampener bolts.
Tighten



Tighten the bolts to 21 N.m (15 lb ft) .








Align the crankshaft timing mark (2) to the timing mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener (1).
Hold the camshaft sprocket with the timing chain hanging down.
Install the timing chain to the crankshaft gear.








Align the timing mark on the camshaft gear (4) with the timing mark on top of the timing chain dampener (3).
Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket.








Draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft using the mounting bolt.
Coat the crankshaft and the camshaft sprockets with engine oil.
Tighten



Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 140 N.m (103 lb ft) .
Install the engine front cover.

Have seen them fail. If infact it did break you probably have bent valves:frown: It is for sure an interference engine!
 
No it didnt break, I wasnt sure if it was a chain or belt, Just thinking i should do it since it has 152000 miles on it. Ghall, thanks for the procedure, i take it i should be able to get any sprecial tools from autozone.
