Well season is coming to end in just under a week. It’s been really tough hunting locally as the heavy rains and floods this past spring destroyed most of the nesting areas. The bird count is down 33% from last year and I don’t recall how down it was last year but it was bad. We really need a couple of good nesting seasons to bring the birds back. With that said I still hunt as much as possible. I love the exercise and so does my dog. Just being in the fresh cool air surrounded by all the beauty is enough to make the outings fun. I was fortunate enough to get my limit this morning. I’ve not been able to do that too many times this year. How’s your year been?

Beautiful dog and birds!!!

It has been years since I went Pheasant hunting. Mostly on a reserve though as not to many left in the wild around here... We see them occasionally but not enough to really sustain a solid hunt!

Very nice dude! Gotta love those floods we had this year. They did seem to wipe pretty much everything out. I was suprised to see 4 trotting across the field behind my parents house Xmas eve. Those were the first I have seen all year. Nice shootin!

Banner year in Kansas this year:biggrin:

Man, I wish we had those around here in NC. Quail are hard enough to find. Gorgeous dog you got there.

I went out a couple of times this year with my Gordon Setter for her first hunt. She needs a little more training, but is very birdy. On my last hunt (Nov. 1) I slipped in an irrigation ditch and broke my fibula (small bone in your shin) and limped around the rest of the day. We saw two roosters fly away about 150 yrds away, but nothing else in the wild. I had to have surgery and have a plate installed, so THAT ended my hunting for the season. I am planning on a hunt to a release site on February. (private hunting reserve) Gotta get my dog back out. She did get a bird or two up at a relese site, but I was on the other side of the tall shrubs (6+ feet) they flew out of, and didn't get a shot off. They were about 15 feet away, but I couldn't see them well enough to ensure no one else was in the range of fire. Not worth it to me. No one will ever accused me of shooting like Dick Cheney.;) Here is my Gordon Setter.

Thanks for the kind words on the dog. I worked really hard with him when he was a pup. I put him on tons of birds and he is as in love with hunt as much as I am. He is as nice of a dog as you could ever meet. He is very strong and his endurance and desire amaze me.

Very nice looking pup Ken. A friend of mine had one of those years ago and it was awesome.

I took a couple trips to South Dakota this year and the bird numbers there are insane. I hunted state ground literally flushed 300-500 birds a day. They are the wildest birds I’ve ever seen. Often flushing 300 yards ahead of you. Here is a picture I took from another site I frequent. If you are into birds South Dakota is a must. I’ve never gone to Kansas but I hear it’s great as well.

Is that my "door prize"? I'm on my way!!! If I could get enough time off, I would. Maybe next year. I will PM you and maybe we can set a hunt up. Not sure how my dog will like to fly, but we'll see. I'd hate to leave her behind.:frown:

Beautiful dog and birds.

I haven't been Pheasant hunting in 30 years.

Go deer hunting with my brother in law. Got three this year

Hunt animals with my Peterbilt too. LOL
Got a pheasant a few years ago stuck in the grill and a deer that same year.
Got them both on the first try, never had to hit them twice.

Ty, which part of Kansas are you located? We have a deer lease in Eureka

No kidding!? I am in north central Kansas. Eureka is down by Wichita which is 3 hrs from me. IF you want the BIG deer come up North LOL:cool:

How about just a generic bird hunter. Although a trip up nort is planned next year for phesant, woodcock and Grouse.

There are some wild birds out there (mostly quail) but it's hard hunting so we use preserves for dog training. For the past week we've been finding some Yankee woodcock here down south.

Here's my photoset on flickr.
