I wouldn't bolt either of those turbos up on a stock car. Get the fuel system up to snuff and get the exhaust side taken care of, then think about a turbo/injectors combo. Check my recipe at http://gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/hotair2.html it won't tell you exactly what parts to buy, but it explains everything you need to consider in order to start making power.

On another note, I believe the TA48 is similar to the TA33, just with even larger compressor and exhaust turbines.

well i had to upgrade my fuel inj. and pump but, yeah it bolts right up. i have 42.5# inj, walbro307 hot wired, adj. fuel reg., and a chip for 93 octane and with a bad tranny i walked all over a 320 horsepower Cobra. this set up has done well for me. i like it very much and can't wait to improve on it even more.

hey turbogimp now is that a ta48 that u bolted up? and damn im glad to be hearing those kinda racing moments brings mt hopes up but what im also wondering is what else did u upgrade on ? did u upgrade the basic stuff as far as fuel like u mentioned and up pipe, dp , exhaust chip etc what else did u do ? if u dont mind sharing thanx

Hey...who rated the thread? Thanks!!! lol...as for the TA48, is this the turbo that they rebuild from your original? I talked with somebody from precision, but my memory is fried...college...But they did mention that they would take my turbo and make it an 11 sec TA series whatever! Basically the same as a 33, but i think he was leaning towards going farther with the turbo in terms of what, I am not sure, but he said 11 sec out of my old equipment with their craftsmanship will certainly be do-able.
I wanted the TA 51 or 52, but I am hearing from redhotrod and a few other guys that I need to fabricate an adapter for the intake to turbo, as some are doing now, or already have done. I just want to bolt the damn thing in and peel out of the garage!!!! oh well. Thanks for the bunch of stars on the thread, and tell us more about the TA48!!

John

I e-mailed Precision for more information regarding the TA48, I'll post the reply as soon as I hear back from them. Based on the numbers given above, it looks more like a TE34 or TE44 internally, T04E compressor cover - 3" Inlet and 2" Outlet, 57 or 60 trim comp wheel, T-31 76 trim turbine wheel, .63 A/R. A large 60 trim comp turbine would put in in the TE60 range.

well the easy stuff was done like breathers and deleated coolent lines. hooker duel exhaust, stock down and inlet pipes. and yes its the ta-48 that i have. if my memory serves me Precision told me that it flows very simular to the ta-49 but in the 84-85 housings. the ta-48 is like 20 horsepower less than the ta-49 because of the stock housings for our 84-85 turbos are not as flow friendly as the 86-87 housings. also the Cobra with 320 horsepower was at the crank not the wheels. i have only had this car for about a year and got to drive it about 2-3 months between getting it running and the point when the tranny died. so im going on the train of thought that every thing is stock except for my mods that i have already done or have seen done. i cant wait until i go and rebuild the engine and find out if it is stock or not. the prev. owner was an idiot and knew nothing about this car or at least wouldn't tell me anything.

ok my question is do i have to remove my turbo and send it in to get it done to a TA48 like i would wit a t33c? or can i just purchase the whole turbo itself?

Turbobooster: I contacted precision and yes, you do have to send in your core. I was also told that if you just want a TA 49 or higher, John Craig has welded the adapter to the turbo so that it fits correctly, without having to fabricate any parts. I guess no matter what, the turbo has to be shipped to somebody..>As for me, being a college kid, I am in no rush at all, so sending one thing here and another there is no biggie...I still need $$$ for my heads, injectors and a tranny!!! Everything else is complete, but I know the turbo is the big deal, so that is next on my to do list when the trans is done.

john

well no you could pay $100 more for the ta-48 without the core but you can get that money back when you return the old one. my old turbo was shot so it was no big deal to me to send it. that is cool about the welded the adapter from John Craig i will have to keep that in mind when the time comes to replace this turbo. will the same adapter work for other larger turbos?

checkout my thread in the turbo and turbo related parts forum...there is a thread called TA 49 in a Hot Air...A few replies are on their about what people are doing to get the bigger turbo's in.

John

I understand you can blow a head gasket with stock injectors and an upgraded turbo, but is it ok to drive around with a TA-49 with stock injectors for one month as long as I don't get on it? That's gonna be my problem after next week.

Yeh you'll be fine. I have a 33 on my car running 30# injectors, basically stock. I have a knock problem if I run anymore than 11-12 lbs tho. If you keep the boost down you will be fine.

And I've even raced my car with this combo and no blown gaskets.

My suggestion...if your only a month away from getting the inhectors to compliment your turbo, than just wait. You have to take the turbo off again to do the injectors, and everyone knows what a major pain in the @ss that job is. No sense in doin it twice.

I hope to have some 009's by spring for mine, I'm hoping to run some race gas and finally turn the boost up....should be interesting!

I'm running a turbo John Craig did from 3 years ago and the 11's seem pretty doable...LOL They're good people and so is precision. :D

hey Jamie, What turbo do you have from John? Everybody tells me that the 33 is a great item, but is it an 11 sec turbo? Worst case scenario, I get a 3000 stall converter and get a ta52 with an adapter welded to it! I would love to have a great looking turbo under the hood, but i have to go sub 12, even if it is 11.98. That is my goal, and the t33 seems to be more compettive in the mid 12 range. Got any ideas?

Thanks jamie

John

The one we ended up with was the second to the last one Lee Thompson had done by John at the time. I know that doesn't narrow it down, but John knew at the time exactly what we wanted. I've been nothing but happy with the turbo and it must be good, Lee went low 11's on his before upgrading. John would be able to set it up.

ok, thanks jamie. Basically, the jist I am getin here is to see John C. After that, I am feeling that there is a 50/50 split on to get the 33, or not get the 33...I'll put it this way. I do not want to install a turbo in my car, and try for months on end to tune it just to break the 12 sec barrier. I especially dont want to buy a turbo and find out that I need a bigger one to attain my goals later on...I want to get there with a well tuned machine, but with less cost and track time to me. I plan on budgeting as long as I am in school, and I plan on putting at least $2000 into the motor in the next 8 months, however, a greater of that portion is going to some turbo no matter what. If anyone here knows how to fabricate, or has even fabricated this before, please, drop me an email: Turbo to Intake adapter for TA series precision turbocharger to hot air intake. I caught wind that John C did this once before in the turbo forum, and I am not sure what he did, or what others have done except for red who is doing it now. If I can get a TA 52 turbo @$780 without the adapter, then I can have money left over for the necessary fabrication of an adapter. I was told that the t33 would cost me somewhere in the vacinity of 830-850, with a polished compressor (a must for a show and go) If I am to sink $2000 dollars into my motor, then damn right it is going to look nice! But I still have to budget for the injectors and for the converter. Please let me know if there is anyone out there in the business of converting a TA series turbo to a hot air intake, and if there is any alternative besides the TA 48, or the T33. Thanks a ton everyone, you've all been a great help.

John

This is a great thread, giving me lots of info that I need since my turbo is shot. So I am going to bring it back fromt he dead.

But I want to throw another variable into the mix.

I have a spearco intercooler kit. The one where you spin the compressor housing to outlet forward. Then plumbing goes to the i/c, out of the i/c and back into the intake manifold.

I need a turbo now, and the ta33 was discussed. however, since I am not going to be adapting it to the intake, are there other options? Can I go with a larger/better flowing turbo housing and still have it bolt up to the turbine side? Like a TA-49 or maybe larger? I can have the fabrication doe for the adapter to my I/C plumbing, ut I would like it if the exhaust side bolted up as it should as well as the TB. If need be, I can have a TB adapter made, but at that point we are starting to lose out on the cost/benefit ratio...

What do you think?

A friend of mine had the factory turbo adapter welded to the compressor housing by John Craig about a year ago. It is on a TA-54 from Precision. There is some fabrication required to mount the TA series turbos to the hot-air motors. If you just want to bolt on and go. I would not mess with a TA series turbo. The TA48 sounds good if it is a direct bolt on to the hot air intake mounts and brackets. Thats were we had to do some fabrication on the TA-49 and 54 that the car had on it a while back. Also the oil drain back line had to be modified.

check out the pics of the turbo and adapter on these photo sites

t 48 vs tbo33

is the t48 a direct boltin and nothing has to be welded to it?
my stock turbo is shot and i was going to go with a t48 and atr dp. if you have to weld the adapter on it i will just get the t33

also i want to get a steel braided oilline .anyone know who makes them for hotairs?
thanks andy:confused:
