I got out of law enforcement in 2003(served 8 years) before the taser really came into play. It is a very good tool and certainly fills the gap between baton strikes and deadly force on the continuam scale.
The O.C. was some pretty bad stuff also..I made alot of big grown men cry.

Our policy lists the Taser as the same use of force level as O.C.
I am a drycleaner now...go figure that one out. Took over my parents business. It is more $ for my TR habit.
As far as the continuam scale of use of force you are right. By the book the taser=O.C. on the scale. I am speaking from real world where you actually get all of your training. The academy just teaches you to pass tests. The real test is when you have 4 people fighting in a bar and your first on the scene and backup is 2 minutes( AN eternity) away.
A good scenario is a subject armed with a knife or any other puncture weapon. If he is a good distance then the taser replaces the baton and maybe even your duty weapon. I know I wouldnt spray(o.c.) someone with a knife. Then all you have is a blind knife weilding subject. Before tasers you would have been forced to go right to deadly force(sidearm). That taser will make you instantly forget you are holding a knife....

Taser says no. There have been some deaths where a Taser was involved but it has not been determined the cause of death.

I was certified 3 years ago....full ride. I do not recommend. In the case of the taser, it is much more blessed to give than recieve.

Not pleasant. We have one Troop that it won't drop, Taser Inter'l says he's among a very small percentage that it has a limited effect on.

In Chicago we do not need to be tased to be certified. Theres no way I need to be tased to use it effectively and wisely. Thats absolute nonsense. I feel sorry for anyone that had to get it in order to carry it. My partner took a tasing and has it on video. He wont email it to me because he knows I will have it loaded on every department computer by the end of the day. Hes a big strong guy but he went down like a ton of bricks.

I totally agree with you. The guys here were just getting their jollys off watching other co workers take it. It was more like entertainment. I refuse to take part in someones good time at my expense..LOL
That sounds kind of like the ending of Scream. When the 2 kids were stabbing each other at the end.

Yea, you don't want none of that! Trust me. Let me tell you it's a loooooong 5 seconds! I pleaded with a guy the only night telling him that he did not wan't any of this. I must have sounded pretty convincing cause the look in his eyes was like "He ain't playen, he really dosen't want me to get hit with this thing". He went right to the ground when I told him he ain't faster then these prongs are that are shooting out of this weapon like a bullet. It has a laser on it as well so it looks a little more intimidating I guess.
Once you have been hit with one you think twice about shooting someone with it who really dosen't deserve it. Even know it's just about at the same level of force continuim as Mace but it's 100 times worse and my eyes are real sensitive to OC (Mace) and I'll take the OC spray all day long before I get jolted with that MF-er again. F-that
:biggrin:! I still have a huge black and blue mark on my a$$ from more then two weeks now where the prong went in. It's a great tool for law enforcement tho. It prevents people from getting their heads split open with flashlights and it prevent the Cops from injury. As soon as the 5 seconds are up there are no real lasting effects unlike a suspect who almost had his arm ripped right off the other night when the K-9 got him. They make a shotgun version as well that shoots about 80 feet I believe.

I thought Taser International required any off. to take a hit before they could carry it? Guess not. WTF.... lol.
I'm glad I got hit tho. One, you don't use it sparringly. Two, you get a true understanding of how effective it really is. And three, if someone gets your taser away from you it will be easier to defend yourself in a possible civil suit due to you exercising deadly force to prevent the suspect from tasing you rendering you defenseless against attack and subsequent death or serious bodily injury because you can testify personally how useless you would be if being struck. The same can be said for OC but on a different level because one could still call for assistance and better defend their sidearm from being removed because you still have your strength. Not so with a Taser.
But I certainly wouldn't want to do it again. Sticking you finger in a light socket aint got $hit on the Taser...lol
It depends on the instructor. The officers department that I was certified by requires that the officer receive a shot from the Taser for certification.
We could have used another instructor but it would have prolonged the certification process another couple months. I choose not to wait any longer as I have had two incidents lately where I could have used the Taser and avoided injury to myself and the suspect.
If I had to choose between being Tasered or sprayed with OC, I would take the Taser again
. It has been 11 years since my OC certification and I remember the pain from the OC being much worse.Just a thought. Tazer Intl. suggests that you get a tazing, but does not require it as a user. Only their Master Certified Instructors are required to take the ride. Master instructors will then certify the line level class instructors.These guys are also asked to get tazed , but not required to.

Yea, our chief says "You dont get zapped, you dont carry it"
...lol I figured it was an individual policy thing but wasn't sure. We still had some wossies that would not take the hit. Their comments were "Do I have to get shot with a gun to carry a firearm" lol what a bounch of cowards! We had 100lb. females taking the hit...lol How embarassing IMO. I mean **** it's only 5 seconds. Granted it sux, but cmon!
