I got my GNX dash all goin good in my 86 and I tried following the autocalibration instructions for getting the correct MPH reading and the needle is acting all goofy. It shows somewhat close to the MPH I am going, but the needle is bouncing + or - 10 mph constantly. I am using an electronic hall effect sending unit that connects to the LOWER speedo cable. It has 3 wires (white, red, and black). I have black going to ground, red going to terminal 2 on the back of the speedo, and white (with a double splice) going to terminals 6 and 8 just like the instructions say to wire.
Anyone running the electronic VDO speedo?

I run the same dash but never had to calibrate. The speedo reads the same as the MPH on my scanmaster. I do need to go back and lubricate the cable feeding to the guage itself because it squeaks and jumps a little. Could your speedo cable be bad?
I don't think the cable is bad because the needle on the stock dash read smooth. I really think its the speedo gauge itself. I just don't really understand the programming part of it. I went by the book to get the correct MPH signal and the needle is just finicky.

When you first turn the ignition switch on does the guage do a "test" sweep? Mine does everytime. Maybe the guage is bad.

Sounds like the VSS unit or the guage is bad.

Actually the more I think about it I don't think the VSS or guage is bad. Recheck your wiring. All your grounds tight?
I sent the gauge itself back to VDO to have them check it a while back and they said it was fine. I'm just trying to see if other people have it hooked up the same way I do. Red wire from the VSS to terminal 2, white/clear wire to terminals 6 and 8, and black wire goes to ground. Also terminal 4 I think goes to ground as well. Can someone confirm this?

The instructions I have show: 4 wires from the VSS; two with female blade termninals and two male blades. Connect black #7 and red #8 female connectors to #7 and #8 on the speedo. It notes that if the speedo acts "finicky" to only connect the red to #8 on the speedo. My notes state to connect the blue male and t-tap connectors to the green and black wires of the 3-wire harness (green,red,black) going to the stock speedo buffer (little green box located near the radio). DO NOT HOOK ANYTHING TO THE RED WIRE - no longer used.
I can scan and email you a copy of my instruction sheet tomorrow if you need. My dash came from Performance Instruments (Tom from Tx) but he is no longer building them. The dash came with a custom "plug and play" connector so it may not look exactly like yours.

That is just plain badass... I need to get my dash cluster out and replaced with something sharp looking like that.
Or you could get this dash with an entire car that is for sale!
