I think they don't look too good. Band & drum, band has some small cracking on the lining, can't really see it in the pic. 100_3990.JPG

Short answer Yes. I would replace them. If this is a BR transmission it has the wrong return spring assembly. It should have 16 return springs.
 
I would recommend replacing frictions and steels. Check the drum and get a new band. As posted above, get a direct return spring assembly with 16 springs.
 
Case was an OG it's has a CQ vb now. The directs are going to be dual fed when it goes back together.
Do I need a different return spring setup with dual feed? I have another assembly I can take springs from.
Do you think they were dragging with that spring setup or too much slippage on the shift?
 
Can't really tell you why the directs burned. A lot of things could cause it. Low line pressure, wrong clutch pack clearance (too tight or too loose), bad seals and the list goes on. If your going to dual feed your going to need the maximum number of springs (16). I actually use stronger springs than stock when dual feeding. It helps prevent the 2-3 shift bind which has been a common issue when dual feeding.
