Well I am just about done replacing the headgaskets on my car..................and I DIDNT..............I REPEAT I DIDNT PUT THE WASHERS ON WITH THE ARP HEADBOLTS:o

So I called ARP up and they said if the bolts are flush to the heads and torqued they will be fine. They are...so?

What do you guys think:confused: Am I F'ed or what.........I havent started her up.......I have a couple of things left to do and then I am basically ready to start her up.

So, I came here to ask the professionals.........what do ya think. Should I give her a whirl or should I rip her down again?

1QUICK85,

You might be alright but I would suspect that not having the washers installed will have an effect on your torque values. The washer is there to act as a bearing surface between the underside of the bolt head and the cylinder head. Just as a question; What torque value did you use and what did you put on the threads and under the bolt head? Also did you chase the threads in the block?

80FT/LBS.
I saw that there was thread sealer on the bolts.........and read that in the chilton book........so I use thread sealer.
Not sure what chase is.........so probably not.......:o

TIA, Nick

Nick,

Normally before re-installing the heads you want to take a tap and chase the threads in the block. This is to remove any old sealer and rust. If the threads aren't clean you can't get an accurate torque on the bolts. Also using sealant on the threads is fine but you need to use moly lube under the head of the bolt and on the washer if you had installed it. Sounds like the scenario wasn't the best to ensure a good result. Did you check to see if the mating surfaces were flat?

750 H.P.V6 is correct. If i were you will would pull the heads in reinstall them with the washers. DON FORGET TO ADD THE THREAD SEALER TO THE BOLTS WHEN YOU REINSTALL THEM. i don`t know what kind of mod you are running but turbo cars are know for lifting head gaskets.

The bolts heads are flat on to the surfaces...........but sounds like I will be pulling the heads...........anyway I can get away with pulling one bolt at a time or something or just take the head all the way off and get new gaskets? They are the metal gaskets. So thread sealer is fine on the threads.......chase the block holes out and I need to pick up some moly lube.........the arp bolts are good to use again?
Which way do the washers go? Indent up or down to the head of the bolts?
Thank much guys

i am not 100% sure on this one but i will like to think the indent face up.

if you are using a metal gasket and you never start the car. i am sure you can reuse the metal gasket. if you do remove the heads sometime it will cause sealing issue with the water passage way. we use a head gasket sealer. Permatex sells a product call HALOMAR. when you remove the head gasket spray it down with some brake or carb cleaner. let dry then spray a nice even coat of the halomar on both side of the metal gasket.let sit for a few minute then reinstall. try to install the heads gasket by not removing any of the sealer (halomar) for the gasket. this stuff is also highly recommend with installing NEW metal/copper head gaskets.

good luck and take you time.

Thanks for all the info guys!! Can I pick up the moly lube at the parts store? I will probably just get new head gaskets, might as well....I don't want to take any chances(since I am doing this agian for the second time in two weeks ;) ). I ordered my first set of headgaskets thru Postons...........will the parts store have just as good headgaskets?
Do you guys torque to 80 FT/LBS of torque.......or with your experience is there a better torque? I should have posted before I did anything.....I dont know why I didnt:oI usually do:(

TIA, Nick
