I have this transmission sitting next to the car waiting to go in and realized 2 things...I am missing the TV cable (ordered off of G-Body) and the second thing more puzzling is the new trans doesn't have any wires? what is this going to do to my shifts and is the ECU going to freak out? How do I solve this issue??

What kind of car are you putting it in? By no wires do you mean you dropped the pan and there is no wiring harness inside the transmission? Does the transmission have a 4 terminal plug on the side of it?

Sorry, I should have included that information in the first post. 1987 GN, I haven't had the pan off since it is a brand new trans, there is no plug on the side of the trans at all...I am confused. I went against every rule I have ever set for myself and bought someone else's project (mid project) it is really I great shape and I am pleased with all of the parts and equipment I got with the package but I am having to figure out some of these things.

Pix of said trans, especially the Dr side where the plug is. It is near the shift selector about mid trans.
The wiring just controls lockup in the torque converter.
By New trans, do you mean overhauled/rebuilt? Who built it?

Art Carr built the transmission...here it is.

Art Carr was never a fan of lock up converters in a GN, and built many w/o this feature!

The ECM does not care if is is lock up or not as shifting is done in the trans, not the computer. If it was built for a non LU converter, it should have the minor mods for that condition?

Excellent, I was worried that the ECU was going to throw up a bunch of codes on the dash but another forum member told me that wasn't the case so I feel better now. I know that Art personally built this tans to match this motor and the specs so I am confident that it is set up right I am just trying to get it all sorted out.

It may or may not be an issue depending on the chip you are using. Without the wiring there is no 3rd or 4th gear status going back to the computer. Some chips use that info to control timing and boost.

There you go bringing me back to reality "mikestertwo" that's the other thing I was worried about is it not getting the info it needs. I assume if I take the panel off tomorrow and tell y'all what chip is in it then you can tell me if that is the case?

I have the same transmission in my TTA. I've swapped chips several times since I've owned it and never had an issue. It was in the car when I bought it and I didn't know anything about NL mods. I did notice on Direct Scan that the computer has no idea what gear it's in but it's never been an issue. I have ANS knock alert and a scan master on the car and never had any knock until the fuel pump went. I always wondered about the timing in different gears that's programmed in the chips but this car runs awesome. I know there are probably better N/L converters out today but I bought this car back in 1999 and it was my DD until 2006 when it was decided for me that the kids needed more room back there. I wouldn't worry about the chip. I would install it and turn the boost down a few pounds and slowly bring the boost back up.

Mine just shows that it's in 3rd and 4th at the same time on the P.L.

I am glad that you mentioned "Direct Scan", I am new to the GN game so please forgive my ignorance but...

I have a box with several 3.5" drive disc's but obviously that is not going to work in my computer so how am I going to use this software? Is there an update for this on CD or can I download it somewhere?

I still have an old computer that has windows 98 that was what I used before the scan master came out. I don't use it anymore because the battery in the laptop doesnt hold a charge and its just too cluttered with a power inverter, laptop and bulky cable and connector. most use the power logger these days. The newer laptops don't have the printer port that connected to the direct scan interface cable. If you still have an older laptop with the big printer port you should still be able to use it and something is better than nothing. The power logger probably updates much faster and is more in tune with today's technology. Now that someone else mentioned it I think it did have the third and fourth gear indicator on at all times. Good luck with the transmission. I think you will be impressed with how a transmission that is matched to your combo should wake it up. Mine is 3500 stall and it keeps the engine in its power band at all times. I am able to run a big turbo with no lag.

Yeah, I a pretty pumped about it and hoping to get 700 at the wheels. I had to order a new oil pan this weekend because the oil return bung was leaking and couldn't be re-welded (long story). I ordered the RJC 14 bolt pan since I have a 4.1 block. Since I had the time to mess around I decided to go ahead and order the "Super Extreme" radiator from GN1...should have that beauty bolted in this week too! once I get the parts this week I should have her back together and making smoke by this weekend. I guess I can just use my Scanmaster and not worry about the Direct as can for now. Can't wait to get everything buttoned up and take a turn in huge new machine!

I bought a project that someone ran out of money and lost interest in...the hard part has been figuring out where everything goes again since I literally bought a basket case and have never built a GN in my life! tilt has been challenging but a blast at the same time. I am so glad I decided to install AC in the garage this summer! it has made this whole project a dream! I live in Texas and without the AC this project would have to wait until December!!!

Got the Intercooler installed today and mocked up the piping for the new instal, now it's time to break out the TIG and get fabricating!

Also installed the smoked lenses on the front and rear today...I have had them for a few weeks now and couldn't take it any longer, I had to see what they were going to look like!

Thanks! I am having a blast learning about these cars. I have a little experience with pro chargers but have never built a turbo car completely on my own before.

I think you are right though, traction is going to be an issue. Once I get the motor and trans back in I am going to concentrate on the rear end and brakes!
