I have a stock trans with Art Carr shift kit and B&M plate cooler.

I am thinking of a TE-44 this coming spring.

Will the tranny live or do I need a rebuild? If I need a rebuild how much am I looking at and how strong do I need to go?

My 50K mile 87GN needed the tranny rebuilt right after I put in a TA49 and 2800 stall TC. More power finished it off. A buddy of mind experienced the same after adding more power. It's just a fact of life. You can just run yours until the tranny starts slipping, usually the 1-2 shift. Then a rebuild is $1500-$2500 depending on how bullet proof you want it - race vs. street.

When the time comes, I highly recommend only having it rebuilt by one of the reputable 200-4R builders named in this web site.

Personally, I think all the 200r4s need some upgrades, especially the intermediate band servo pin assembly. Most are probably "slipping" horsepower.

[/B][/QUOTE] you got that right, listen to the man. i went trough 6 transmissions until finally i brought it to dynotech. funny how everyone says they can build a 2004r real good. i guess i was even better at breaking them. :D

hey Bill...let's put it this way...my stock tranny BLEW UP when I put a 44 on it...mine had alot more miles on it than yours does but still...I think the stock trannys are JUNK from the factory...you can try it for a while but the moment you start noticing a problem shifting...take that sucker out of there and get it rebuilt by Vince Janis...the man knows what he is doing...hey if you need help taking the trans out let me know...I've taken mine out twice now and know exactly what to do...takes about 2 hours...Janis rebuilt mine for street/strip with a billet forward drum and stock converter for $1700...if you want a billet input shaft then the cost goes to $2000...add $800 for a billet PTS 9/11 converter like I got...but if you never want to upgrade the TE-44 then stick with the stock converter...JMO;)
