I've done a search, and couldn't find anything on the subject. My question is, does the diaphram hold the WG closed, or does it push it open?

We have an ATR external WG on our TTA, and the car will only make 20# of boost, and 20# only. We even tried disconnecting the hoses, and still, same results.

I just pulled the WG apart, and found a small crack in the diaphram, so I am thinking it may be bleeding off boost, but then again, I was under the impression that it held it closed.

Any input, to help me out?

TIA,
BA

BUT depending on how you have your bleeder valve lines run, you could have the return line (from the bleeder) run back to the top port of the wastegate which would force air back down on top of the diaphram, thus increasing boost.

The diaphram (and valve, and bushing, and both mounting flanges) are shot on my ATR external gate. When it all worked, it worked well. Now... I don't know if it's worth sh#t.

Hope this helps.

However, if I disconnect the hose from the wastegate, it should keep it closed, thus allowing for "infinite" boost. Correct?

That leads me to believe the WG itself is leaking. If that is the case, how do I check that?

gate'sopen, horses are out??

I had one of the ATR's and before I could get it to work, I had John Craig modify it.
I used it for a VERY short time, and it became unstable.
I found that the stainless valve face had eaten the mild steel mounting flange,[ATR headers] up so bad there was a continous leak of exh gas.. thus the problem kept getting worse..

Took it off, replaced the gate w/ an Innovative, and new flange... Rock solid now...

Problems I've seen:
A. The valve seal is on the flange and not in the body of the gate.
B. The valve guide has problems holding the valve strait, due to wear and sticking on the stem.

Could be you have a non operating gate that leaks enough exh gas to level off at 20psi.. Better that, than 40psi!!
IS the boost really slow to rise??

No, the boost comes on fine, just can't make more than 20#, even with the WG hose off.

Strange, it must be a POS, even though it's new.

Plumbing??

Which port are U using for the hose??
Is this a bleeder valve setup??

There should be a bronze breather in the port on the top of the gate, and a fitting in the lower side for the hose.

We have the hose hooked up to the fitting on the side of the WG. Yes, this is a bleeder valve set-up......should it have been hooked up somehow to the breather on top of the WG? How does that breather actually work?

Again, thank you.

Hose on top??

As I recall, the instructions that came w/ mine indicated there's no hose to be installed on the top port.
Putting boost on both sides of the diaphram forces the boost to be controlled only by the spring.
If you don't have the instructions, I'd suggest you get them from ATR....
You said the unit is "new". If so, why not return it for warranty and let them replace the diaphram??

What size Exhaust Housing vs Waste Gate Hole!
Mine works fine. I can bring mine to #30
Use the Both Port Method, with a Boost Controler.

Sounds like the spring is too light. ATR sells at least 3 (if not 4) springs for the wastegate. Each one is a different weight (5#, 10#, 12#, 18#, etc.).

P.S. You could always make a set of block off plates and remove the wastegate to see if it isn't something. just make sure to watch the boost gauge and be ready to lift QUICK!
