Well my stock "rusted to hell" headers have been welded twice and they keep on cracking so I think it's time for some new headers and I was considering the Poston headers and crossover because they are cheaper than ATRs, but a friend of mine had some problems with the installation and fit of the Postons and his crossover cracked which made me think about spending the extra $$$ on the ATRs.... My question is for those that have the ATR headers and the crossover pipe cause after doing a search on the ATR headers I found some mixed feelings about them and I would like to know how well they fit and how easy the installation is as well as if they have cracked at all and I was also wondering if any saw performance gains (wishful thinking) after putting on the headers and crossover? I know my car should run better with them cause my stock DS header was leaking pretty badly when I ran 12.20 @112mph a while back and it seems like most like how their TR sounds after putting on the ATR SS headers:D

I bought their(ATR) SS replacement drivers side header and crossover pipe. I also got the SS 2 1/2" exhaust system. I am very happy with the system and installation was a breeze.
 
I have the headers crossover dowmpipe 21/2 inch all the way back with ss pit bulls sound awesome also test pipe nice fit look good.:D
 
I dont have mine on yet, but I have a set of 4 bolt headers and they look to be of the same high quality as my 3" exhaust. They are simply friggin gorgeous! Now if I ever get my motor, I'll see how they fit :p
 
I would just buy another used driver side manifold that was cracked but hasn't been repaired for $25-$40 and have it properly repaired for $35 - $70 and take the $600 you save not buying headers and spend it on something that will actually improve performance at your level.
 
I got their driver's side replacement header and two piece crossover (which I later had welded to one piece). They've been in for a year now, and now problems at all.
The reason I opted initially for the two piece crossover is to compensate for any differences in the new header and the old passenger side header I left on. Then once on and fit properly and heat cycled enough times I drove down to a local muffler shop and had them weld the two pieces together. It was a breeze and easy for him to do right on the car (since the ATR crossover hangs a little lower).
 
I do not know about friend but I have used the Postons on my car and a couple of others. I really like them. They are ceramic coated steel and the flanges are thick and seem to stand up well. Their warranty has been good and they work with the stock cross over. I am very happy with mine and have had no problems with them. The ATR is also nice but for the money and fact I do not have to buy another down pipe to clear I chose the Poston's and have been very happy with them.
 
Anyone use the Hooker haeders?I heard they dont work until you reach 11.40 or better.If you try them on a slower car they take forever to spool up.Any truth to this?
 
UNGN, I know what you're saying, but I'm really tired of having header leaks and looking at these "rusty crusty" stock headers and I know that eventually my car will be quick enough to benefit from them so I think it will be $$$ well spent.... also about the only other bolt-on I can do at this point would be a better intercooler (I have a stocker with the bigger Duttweiler necks) and I really don't feel like waiting months for a V4 from CAS and a front mount IC would probably require me to upgrade my cooling system which will cost more $$$ than the cost of the ATR headers....

Machinegun, I have heard from some other people that the Postons are good quality headers, but my friend told me that the Poston ceramic coated steel headers are pretty heavy compared to the stainless steel ATR headers and the price difference between the ATRs and Postons is only $300 and IMO that's not that bad cause you get lighter headers and you won't have to worry about them rusting cause they are stainless steel....

On a side note I would really like to hear if anybody saw any performace gains when they put on the ATRs and/or if you noticed better throttle response or better spool up?? Thanks again for all the replies!

I switched back to the stockers at the advice of the board saying they were better for my car at my power level than the AATR pieces.

Let me know if you're interested in them. I can send pictures if you want or check the parts for sale section since I posted them there a few months ago. I'd attach the thread but I'm too stupid to figure out how to do that.

keep in mind if you happen to be using a Houston downpipe, it will not fit on the ATR headers......
 
I have not had either, but if you have the money go for it. Eventually it will pay off, plus they look WAY better than the stock crustys. LOL :D
 
Woody, I spoke with ATR and they said as long as my Houston downpipe is the type for production headers it will fit fine on the ATR headers and they told me the Houston downpipe for aftermarket non-production headers would not fit on the production "3-bolt turbo" ATR headers.... Thanks for the heads up!:)
 
Hey I have the ATRs on my 87, my dad has them on his 85 in the sig and headers for the 86 were ordered and sitting in the house. I like them a lot. They look great even when the steel turns ugly and they are worry free after you get any little bugs worked out. I couldn't get my crosover to seal in the middle so I welded it and now it is a one peice crossover. My first set cracked and ATR immediatly replaced them and I have not had a problem since. If you have the money then go for them. You will see more power , especially on the topend(not that much but you should notice a little gain.) I don't believe this whole headers don't do anything, I mean freeing up exhaust will add HP no matter what. Our log headers that came stock do not flow that well. I know it was a magazine test but in Hot Rods 400 hp build up of one of their writers GNs , KB headers added 13 or so hp. They are very easy to install, and all of mine have fit well. I have also heard good things about postons as well. And ATR and terry Houston make a special 3" DP to fit the ATRs. Thats my .02$. Good luck.
 
Your car isn't really fast enough for headers and may slow down if you put them on at this point. You could better spend that money. Pull your stock ones or buy a set and have them ceramic coated. they will look great. I personally prefered the sound of the stock headers over the ATR's and went back to stockers.

You were given bogus advice. You need to keep in mind that the driver's side replacement header and they accompanying crossover pipe are NOT mainly for performance, they are "REPLACEMENTS" for the stock pieces, and as such should not yeild any appreciable performance gains. They are very high quality stainless replacements, that will probably outlast your car.

If you were looking for performance gains, you should have gone with full headers. BUT only if your engine is built to take advantage of them.

The pieces you have are perfectly good for what they were intended to do. Replace worn out stock units, period, nothing else.
