We may have discussed this before, but can we run 100 low lead aviation fuel in our cars? What are the pros and cons?

My fire station is ON an airport, and I'm good friends with some of the fuel guys. Maybe they can hook me up.

Pro's: can run more boost & timing to help your TR go FASTER!

Con's: Contains tetra-ethyl lead which will kill O2 sensors & clog catalytic converters

Alternatives: Xylene homebrew (3 gallons xylene, 9 gallons premium unleaded & ~2 OZ of Marvel Mystery Oil) or Alcohol Injection, either of which WON'T kill the O2 or clog the cat, both help keep the combustion chamber VERY clean AND the xylene brew will clean any old varnish/gas residue/gunk from the fuel system.

That's all I used to run when I drove my car. I could get it for $2.10 a gallon if I wanted to drive 60 miles or at my local municipal airport for $2.60 a gallon. I used it for about 5000 miles before I had to replace an O2 sensor, of course I had no cat. Oh, and it smells great while the car was running.

2 friends use to race with Av fuel but on a weekend that was a 2 day event they ran out so they used race fuel on the second day. Both of them picked up approx .4 from the switch to race fuel. One went from 12.6 to 12.2 the other went from 12.4 to 12.0...

They do run it on the street tho for play time..

have run it many times and havent had a problem yet. i get it for 1.66 a gal so its not so bad. just remember...its not race gas and you will be ok.

Josh, what are you talking about................
1.66 a gal so its not so bad.
, that is about what I pay for 93 or 94 gas. I WISH I could get 100 octane gas for 1.66 a gal. I'd run my car all day long on it.;) ;) ;)

We can just ride up to the Airport Fueling center, hop out wit our gas can, go inside and say I need some avgas..they will take the can , put in the amount we ask fr and bring it back to us. NO PROBLEMS. They will not pump it into the car of course but never a prolem getting AVgas down here.

Ya, Thats because your friends were over octaneing there cars.. A/V gas is more in the 119-120 range when it comes time to rate this (Liquid Gold). The Government has there reasons to keep it rated in the 100-101 octane level. My dad has a small hanger/airport where all the local guys come around and fly there ultralights and small planes.. We get this stuff in the 50gal drum. I have seen the proof.;)

Hey BoostedBug,
Do you think I could pull the same move as you going to a airport, even with 9/11? If you think I can, do you think I should go to a small airport or large one? I'm thinking small.

Thanks,
Jason

Mark,
I'll have to try slipping the gas guy a 10.

When going to the airport, what types of gases can I ask for, just this A/V, or are there others that I can use?

I also use AV gas from the local county airport. No need to slip them any extra cash... no questions are asked. They are in the business to sell fuel and I just drive up with my 3 gas cans and buy it. I've been to 2 or 3 different small airports with the same results.

Just tell them you want the 100 low lead. They'll know what that is. At my airport, they only have 2 kinds of fuels, 100 LL and Jet A, which is basically kerosene.

LL100 is not 119 octane...much lower. :) Some of the other blends which are not common anymore were higher.

"The "Aviation" antiknock rating system is different than the MON rating. 100-oct. on the aviation scale, equals 98.8 MON. The biggest limitation of LL100, when used in very high-compression or high-boost, race track applications requiring leaded gas is octane. "For those applications, AvGas," Tim Wusz told us, "is short on octane compared to most (leaded) racing gasolines. Many racing engines have more spark advance at low rpm and/or during lean, part-throttle operation than AvGas and even some (unleaded) racing gasolines can handle. The result is detonation."

Bottom line: AvGas is ok in off-road situations were a leaded fuel of no more than 98 octane required, ultimate performance is not important and you can accept possible drivability quirks."

HMMMM. my neighborhood is right next to a small airport. :D Never thought about getting gas from there.

I can get 100 octane at the pump for 3.60 a gallon, I guess I'll have to see what the airport wants.... If they will sell it.

Guy's.

AVGAS (100LL) works great. As was stated above it does contain lead (approx .5 gram per gallon) and will ruin your O2 sensor over time.

100LL is not 119 octane as stated above and is not a substitute for high octane race gas ie: C-16, Sonoco Maximal, Cam 2 purple.

It is a good alternative to crappy pump gas though. It's much cheaper than unleaded race fuel (100 to 104 octane) and seems to work at least as well.
