Hi all,,I have a 1983 2004r that I just installed the B&M Street & Strip shift improver kit ,my 1-2 accumulator spring is broken ,the kit had me install the supplied 3/4" spacer for that spring ,should I replace with a stock spring or a stiffer one out of the newer 86-87 GN ,this is a stock tranny from a Olds. car ,I just wonder with the spacer & a stiffer spring if that will be okay ,I want a really firm 1-2 shift ,I won`t be installing the larger GN servo till a later date ,thanks for your help,, Bill..

So all of you don`t use shift kits , come on guys , I was referred to this forum because it suposeadly knows the 200 4R tranny ,I`ve been trying to find answers to my questions and I thought you all would know ??????????

Professional transmission builders don't use B&M kits. So you are likely out of luck getting any information about a B&M kit.

Simple Question ,, what 1-2 accumulator spring do you use ,what advantage is there to blocking off the 1-2 feed hole ,thanks Bill

Blocking the feed hole in the 1-2 accumulator housing will result in a very firm 1-2 shift.

Hi ,will that give any possability of damaging any of the other componants or circuits ,, Bill What if I was to leave that spring out and install a spacer long enough to not allow any movement of the piston ,would that work??thanks

Same effect.
Potential damage to the band lugs, anchor pin, etc.
Depends on the band used, pressures, servo, etc.

Thanks for your help , I`m in Canada + GM here can no longer get the spring Bullsh_t ,I got one supplier on Monday thinks he can get a GN spring ,if he can`t I`m going to mod a spacer to allow mayby 1/8 " travel ,,thanks Bill..

If I might add, you will never get a really firm 1-2 unless you have a bigger servo to help it out. Might have PT firm shifts but if you have power & traction the shifts will go soft @ WOT.

b&m shift kit

several years ago i made the mistake of having a local auto tech install a B&M shift kit in my 30k mile stock 2004r trans. i don't know if it was the kit or the tech, but the trans never worked correctly since ......... ended up having to buy a new trans. :frown:

Hi ,my tranny is shifting really nice with the kit ,I was stupid when I put it together ,the 1-2 spring was allready broken ,so I took the chance on it ,shifts good but not a firm hard shift like it should be ,I`m hoping with the sring installed it will correct that ,I`ve also got a line on a billet servo for $ 106.00 Canadian which is half the price here normally ,does the GN spring have different tensions available as in stiffness ,if so which one do most people use ?? thanks Bill..

I wanted hard shifts too so I took out the 1-2 accumulator piston and spring and put them in the trash. I blocked off the feed hole. With my bigger than GN servo I now have nice hard shifts. I love it.

Thanks Firechicken ,is the feed hole in the accumulator housing ?Do you have a pic of it? I`ve still got my stock servo & won`t be changing it for awhile yet ,can you bark the tires from 1-2 with those mods? Bill

Yes you can bark the tires quite nicely. Yes it is in the housing. Sorry for the poor picture, I drew it on my computer using my mouse and obviously I have little talent. lol

Hey thanks so much ,now to decide ,a supplier contacted me today about the GN spring ,he said about $ 16.00 Canadian ,I think I`m gonna get the spring ,put a few washers under the 3/4 " spacer thats allready in there and put the spring in ,I`ll check to see how far that piston will travel ,I don`t think I should block it off totally ,mayby leave like a 1/4-1/8 " movement of the piston to be safe ,that way it could be reversed if need be ,do you know what size servo the old TH 200 3 speed is ,I hear they work good also ,and are larger than the stock GN ones are ? Bill

There are only 2 good 200 servos. One is the same size as the gn and the other is bigger than GN. The rest are smaller than GN. Do a search it has been covered what the numbers of each are etc. Pretty hard to find one of these servos now.

I would use a new accumulator piston and shaft(housing on 1-2) because they are normally worn out. Same on the 3-4 accum. With the stock band plugging the hole is usually not a problem unless line is really high. I would not plug the hole and omit the springs in the servo. You may break off the anchor or break the band lug. If your going to use spacers on the 1-2 accum piston i would simply block off the feed hole to minimize leakage around the center bore on the piston. You should replace the boost valves int he pump housing to increase line pressure. I would also remove the scarf cut seal on the inner servo (the smaller steel one) and plug the hole in the outer servo. You may want to use governor oil seals on te apply pin to reduce leakage and improve the 3rd oil. Unless the truck is going faster than 110mph in the quarter. You may want to pay a professional to rebuild the unit and replace the breakage prone reverse input drum. The splines will strip off if it hasnt been replaced. Canadian $ are worth more than U.S. $, Lol.

Thanks for your input Bisen ,muchly apreciated ,isent that funny how all these years our dollar wasent worth **** in the USA,, I still won`t buy from there because of the duties payable at the border,,for now I`m just gonna block the 1-2 feed hole to get the direct oil presure to the servo so it won`t flare up ,thankyou ,, Bill..
