My reverse lights only come on for a moment when taking the car from park to reverse. They will not stay on! I have a 1986 GN. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

steering column

take you your hand and manually turn the column on the steering wheel and you see this change....you have a shifter problem on one of the clips probably

Steering Column

Where is this clip you are talking about and how do I fix the problem? Thanks!!

on the shifter cable

under the center console...did turning the column make your lights come back on or off...mine did it also...also could be the adjustment of it....

With the lights on, if your shifter correctly aligns with reverse (when in reverse), then your P/N switch near the bottom of the column is out of adjustment. That switch moves side to side and will make your back-up lights illuminate when properly adjusted.

Thanks for the advice

Thank you for your advice I will work on it tonight when I am home from work... do you know the color of the switch?

That switch is tall, thin and sit perpendicular to the side of the car.

Here is another solution:

The drive rod from the tranny to the steering column has probably slipped a bit over time. Usually, loosening the adjusting bolt (under the car) and pushing the rod up slightly, then retightening, will fix the backup lights or:

With a friend to help (wheels blocked), you can get under the car, have them shift to reverse, and then adjust the rod until the lights come on and re-tighten. It may take a number of tries until everything is perfect because of the play in the shift linkage bushings.
