I am new to owning a PC (was a Mac person). What are you people using to backup your drives?

I want to run an app that will back up my internal to an external. Don't care if it makes an image or just backs it all up uncompressed. I have plenty of room on the external.

I looked at Norton Ghost but it seems very involved.

Ghost will copy all (exe., dll., img., txt., etc.) Everything, a complete copy, however it is fairly difficult if you dont know how to use it. There is a back up feature with windows that will backup certain files to a set drive. You can also schedule this feature to automatically backup every night!

I just added a Maxtor external drive to one of my systems. It includes software called one touch backup. It makes a mirror image of the hard drive you specify. I haven't had to recover anything from a backup yet, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to recover. HTH

Either an external hard drive to copy large amounts of files, or do as I do, copy the import stuff, word docs, pictures, etc. to a CD or DVD.

I use 2 identical SATA drives connected to a SATA raid card. I have them set for RAID 1 (mirroring). This way if one of the drives craps out I just break the mirrir, boot off of the good one, replace the bad one a my convenience, and create a new mirror. Much easier to fix incase of a failure and you always have a real time backup.

the mirror idea is ideal except my machine is a laptop and my external drives are in another room :-(

My plan is to hook the Dell up once and awhile and do a full backup. I have always done the select files backup and then I find myself going DOH..........should have done that file too.

I see Maxtor uses Retrospect to backup up partitions. That is another option I guess.

That is a nice drive but I was kind of hoping to use the two 160 gig drives I already have :-(
