I have been having a problem with my charging system. At idle (or any time the rpms are around 1,000-1100) the volt light comes on. Even with no acc. on at the time. As soon as the rpms rise and it spins the alt a little faster it goes off. I'm pretty positive the car doesn't have an underdrive pully on it. Even if it did, I wouldn't think it would have problems with no load on it.

Could be.. How is the condition of the belt? Does it have enouph tension? What about the connections at the alt. and battery, are they loose? You can also check to see what kind of voltage is coming from the alt. with a volt meter if you have one. Should be about 14 volts. Hope this helps some.

Belt is new with about 1/2" of play. All wires on correctly. I'm gonna check the voltage tomorrow. (have to borrow a meter from my dad).

The exact same thing happened to my car when the wiring harness on top of the altenator went bad. Its the little plastic connector that plugs into it on the top. Sometimes they get coroded and don't make good contact. try cleaning the connectors off and see if it does the same thing. I just went to the local hardware store and bought a new one, cause mine was getting all burnt and looked nasty. but that fixed the problem right up. HTH

take it off, have a friend drive you to an autozone, or any other store, most do free alternator checks.

if it checks out bad, make sure you get a new alternator with atleast 90 amps.. i forget how many my stocker had.. i think 91.. anyway now i have a different bracket and a 120a 87 gn / LT1 alternator..
