Ive been chasing a no lock up problem on my new Vigilante and ran across a post that the solonoid was activating but not holding psi. I took out the solenoid and blew throu it then activated the switch and it slowed my breath but didnt stop it. If it leaks air past the seal in the solenoid while blowing into it could this be enough to keep the 5 disc from locking? Not enough psi? Please let this be it. Thanks for any help.

Yes. The ball has to seal against the end of the phenolic "tube" that is attached to the metal casing of the solenoid. They have a problem with cracks forming and not sealing properly. You can bend the tabs back and inspect where the little ball seats against but still get a new solenoid. This way you can see what I am speaking of. :)

The tranny builder dont think this is the culprit and wants me to put a ball in the tube to seal it for sure then start it and if it stalls in gear its the solenoid, if not its the brand new converter. I bought a new soleniod I will try first. If that dont work its the ball trick. Im just not sure if Im trying to seal the tube or the small hole above the tube where the snap ring is to troubleshoot. Man I sure hope its the solenoid.... Otherwise its a 4 hour drive to the trans shop.

Without looking at it or seeing it first hand, of course he wants to blame the converter. If it winds up being the solenoid, you can tell him "great phone diagnosis" or "thanks for the help". So much for customer service. :frown:

Im not pointing fingers at anyone all the parts and work was bought from the builder. Converter and all work. I just pulled the trans and put it in. Bad news is new solenoid didnt do it and I put a check ball on the top of the tube to push the valve up per his instructions to force lock up. Then started the car and put it in gear. Guess what?.... No stall no lock up. Car drives like normal. I guess its the new converter. I wonder how this is going to end. Man this sucks. Thanks for all the help. Im so glad I bought a hughes pan from Nick Micale for I have drained that at least 6 times this weekend.

??

Just by chance, does it have the lock up tube and if so did they use epoxy to seal the tube to pump housing? I once had a trans that was done like that and some of the epoxy got into the bore preventing fluid from traveling. Having said that, I don't belive the lock up valve would stroke far enough. You did say it stroked. 3/8 in is app. the amount of travel. Best of luck.

Yes the pump was done and exchanged for mine, It was epoxyed and I can move the valve up into the bore. It sure sounds like the converter but no one has had this happen that Im aware of. Its a rebuilt to new converter.I think the plan is to take the car to the tranny shop and he is going to figure it out. I hope its not the converter and just a simple mistake that can be fixed while Im there. Its 4 hours and $30 in tolls one way. Oh well its a Buick....Its not supposed to be easy or cheap lol.
