Beat up Chevr Van

On a 88 Chev Astro van, does the fuel pump fail all at once
or can it work sometimes and graduately go bad....reason why I ask is because a local mechanic wants to charge me $600 bones
to replace my fuel pump & associated parts....can a bad
fuel pump be detected by a engine diagonistics test?

Also why is it that when I use a paper clip in the connector I get a code 32, they run it on their computer no code shows? I told
the mechanic if he can gaurantee this is the problem I would do it...said he would test for FP to see if indeed the FP is the culprit....
any suggestions gentleman...

They don't always failat once. If it's getting weak it should show lean conditions. You can do a fuel pressure test to find out. Sounds high to me to do a fuel pump. What is it doing to make you think the pump is bad??? I believe code 32 is egr. Don, know why it wouldn't show on a scan tool unless the code has already cleared itself on the drive to the mechanic.

Thanks for replying to this thread.....I know most people really don't wanna talk about trouble-shooting a old Astro...had it at the shop today, said FP is bad, sending unit rotted out, clogged fuel filter, gas tank rusted pretty bad, serpentine belt needed replacement...

I though their was no inbetween with a FP, the shop says they can gradually go bad & then all of sudden stop...Hope this is the root of my troubles...

The guys over there have helped me a lot with my 96 Astro. Maybe they have some ideas. The replacement on that pump sounds very high. The pump itself shouldnt cost more than 100 I think. You definately could DIY a lot cheaper.

I just had to replace the fp in my '91 Blazer. It would idle sort of but wouldn't tolerate any throttle. Fuel pump was putting out 13 psi instead of 35 psi, so they can fail slowly.

my fuel pump went bad on my old buick and the next day im on a deserted highway and boom it dies. i had to hitchhike back which i would never want to do agian. funny part is that the guy pulled over said to me "your not going to kill me are you?" lol!!
