I'm pretty sure this is a passenger side bracket attached with a bell housing bolt. i forgot now that the trans has been out for a few weeks - middle or top? what does this bracket do? top bell housing bolt definitely holds the trans dip-stick bracket. thx

Goes in the bottom right bolt hole. It holds the trans cooler lines away from the exhaust.

thx a lot - very helpful information from all posters. trans is bolted up, lines and sensors attached. going to check TV cable tonight per Lonnie Diers guide on mechanical settings, pressure measurement.

getting the dipstick tube into the trans was major pita - i must have done it wrong. with 5/6 bell-housing bolts in i snaked the tube down the firewall to the seal on the transmission. multiple jack heights to get the angle right so there was firewall clearance for the tube. is it easier to install the dipstick before raising the transmission in place? seems like it would be in the way as the trans is raised up/forward to mate with bell-housing.

Install the tube just before the transmision is raised into it's final position.
