Hi everybody, I have a question somebody already asked once before. So here it goes again but I'm looking to upgrade to a maf an translator what's the diff between stock an this one? before I go out an drop 4bills.Would like a little insight if you guys don't mind.

the translator allows you to use a modern maf sensor instead of a reman stock unit. also has some adjustments that can be made inside the translator box.

Other than being able to use a newer design MAF sensor I saw no difference. Sold the sensor and translator a year or two later. I went to Speed Density chip and never looked back. I got rid of the MAF sensor completely. Spent less than the new sensor and translator. I did already have Powerlogger.

Glad you asked,I was wondering the same thing. All I could come up with is that the stock units are getting hard to come by when replacement time comes.

The stock ones are also unreliable and not particularly accurate so a new MAF does make a big difference in how the car drives and most modern MAF sensors are very reliable and much more accurate.

There are a number of reasons for upgrading to the newer GM MAFs and a translator. First of which is that fact that the newer GM MAFs are FAR more reliable, a LOT cheaper than the plastic stocker, and first and formost is that the originals are no longer available. Your are forced to spend upwards of $400-$500 if you can find an NOS unit, or buy a remanufactured unit which have been proven over the years to exhibit very unreliable calibration curves, assuming you even get the correct one. Many parts houses just sell you one for any old normally aspirated 3.8 and things then get even worse.

Then, factor in the added advantage of having more tuning options available to you in whichever Translator you select. There are three, depending on a persons desire for additional tuning features.

Getting and Extender chip to match the Translator you've chosen will add even more tuning features available to the operator.

1. Regular Translator... The easiest plug and go model. Just set one knob inside to identify the MAF you've chosen, and another knob for WOT fuel delivery tuning (with appropriate extender chip)

2. Translator GENII... Which is the replacement for the Translator Plus. It adds far more tuning features across the entire operating band, and even adds WOT wideband tracking if desirable.

3. Translator Pro...(the one I've graduated to) The ulitimate Translator which adds far more features than even the GENII. Wideband tracking across the entire band if desired, or any part of it. Closed loop boost control via the stock harness. Staged dual fuel pump control. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE ABILITY TO RUN SPEED DENSITY (Mafless). The unit is so good that you can use it to run a MAF or run SPEED DENSITY, with some minor tuning changes. I have a bin file for both. Just to feed my endless desire to tinker. I got my maf file tuned to run perfectly, then I remove the maf, switch the Translator to speed density, and load that tune file and again run flawlessly, although slightly zippier because of the better flowing intake tract and VE table tuning.

Your choices are multi faceted but a Translator and matching Extender chip will make for a far better running car!!!

^^^^^^^
What he said. I have a regular translator on my TR and my Dad runs a GenII on his '85 TPI Camaro with closed loop WOT wideband tracking and all. Works great on my car and the GenII is the only reason we make real power with the TPI car; full tuneability. I'll try a pro on my TR someday.

Maybe it's the placebo effect, but me personally, I noticed a better idle & off-idle throttle response was crisper after switching to an LT1/Translator setup.

Just my wooden nickels.....

Not placebo at all. The better flow characteristics of the LT1/LS1 MAFs will definately improve throttle response!

I knew I wasn't nuts. Now if I could only get the voices in my head to go away I'd be fine.:(

What is the diff from the 3 and the 3.5 maf sensors. When do you go bigger? Thanks

Kevin

Just the size difference and ability to flow more. I went with the 3.5" after running the 3" for a couple years, and even felt the difference then, even though I made no other plumbing changes.

I run the 3" LT1 MAF because more flow just makes my part throttle surge worse, otherwise go big.

Well guys after reading what all you bad dudes had to say,I called Eric @ turbotweak an got myself a 3"LT1 an translator so I can see for myself thanks a bunch for your input.Vic
