What is some of the best flat black trim paint, people are out there using to retouch up headlight bezels...etc

i have ben using the colorplace flat black from walmart..it 96 a can and last a real long time .I am in middle of doing my bezels and markers now and i am trying a flat clear over the top of it.I t kind of gives it a dull shine ...

I just did all my trim with krylon satin. Bezels, grill, and all the window trim. I think it looks great.

Mar hyde Black Satin is the closest thing I have found to stock looking. Easy to find too.

I use SEM Trim Black 39143 on my GN. It works just great. All you need to do is sand the item with 400 grit sandpaper and apply three thin coats, with 10 minutes between coats. I just did the T-Top side trims, the headlight rings, the door edge guard, and both rear tail light trim pieces that I got from Intercooled88s,(Bob). I was so happy at how great they look, matches the rest of the stock black trim, spot on. Costs $8.79 at an auto paint store, but to me well worth it. The Krylon semi flat is nice too, but not quite the right semi flat, and only if you look real hard you can spot the difference between them. I've read that the SEM paint is slightly harder paint when dried.

I plan on painting all of the same things that Bruce Urie painted. What is the finish on the SEM trim paint?

I really like Krylon's Fusion line. Satin Black is what you'll want.

Bruce, do you wipe the part down with something before spraying after sanding?

It's satin black. What 49-blues said is correct. Maybe I forgot to say satin in my original post. I was thinking of semi-flat because I've used the Krylon on my Vettes a lot. It's SEM TRIM BLACK, SATIN, 39143

Their website is very informative: SEM Products - Home Site

Yes, if no paint left on the item or just a little left, I wipe the part with acetone if metal, and a tack rag, and just water and a tack rag on plastic. (all after sanding) This did remove all dust very well. The sanding and prep of your piece is the MOST important before paint. I did all sanding before paint with the paper wet. And if you do find a mistake after you've used SEM, you can lightly sand the error away with 400 tri-mite 3mm wet/dry sandpaper. I used the paper wet, continually wetting in a small container next to me in my shop. I'll tell you...my painted parts came out so damn well, just like new. The paint matched the rest of my trim. I'm totally sold on SEM because of this. It's a hard paint after drying. Hope this helps you.

You made a great choice also. My brother bought this Fusion paint and used it to paint his trim on his '87 Regal. He's making it look like the Turbo Regal. I'll have to admit, the paint came out great also. Real nice satin black. Since he did all the trim in black I had nothing to compare it to as far as shade, etc. But it sure is nice paint. I've always had a high opinion of Krylon. Didn't know they made it for plastic parts when I purchased SEM TRIM BLACK until he told me so. I went to SEM strictly on the recommendations of this board and haven't regret it. IMHO, both paints are excellent. SEM is just more expensive but both turn out great. Bishir made a very good choice.

PWSIX, want to let you know about something if you paint the door edge guards...be careful when you rough them up with 400 grit. On the edges of the guard that slips onto the door edges, they are made of plastic. Sanding on that fine edge will ruin them and make them look like crap. Just sand the metal portion of the door edge guards, wipe with acetone on the sanded area only, then do your paining. Ask me how I know this. Just thought I'd let you know and save you some trouble. You'll love the results, just take your time, and remember to keep your parts at a constant temperature during storage before painting and during. SEM recommends 70 degrees at time of paint. Temperature during painting process is so important. I kept my parts hanging in my garage bathroom, which is heated to 70. (along with the can of SEM) Then, after prep, I put them back for an hour, then held parts with a long vice grip, put plastic newspaper bag over my spray hand, shook up can, went outside and applied first coat. It was about 35 outside. Then hung it up in the bathroom, moved on to the next part. First part dried 10 minutes in heated area, then applied second coat outside. Did this three times per part, 10 minutes between coats. But I made sure the temperature stayed warm on the parts and the paint can. I have a tendency to get TOO detailed. Part of my long time job I had. Can't shake it.

Ditto on the SEM. I recently redid all the exterior pieces for an '87 GN I'm restoring.

Michael, I'll bet that GN looks like a million bucks after your restoration of the exterior pieces. Post some pictures if you can when you're finished. I'm trying to restore my '87 GN also (repairing all the damage my late Dad did to it driving it like Mario Andrettii) Coming along so well, I love working on it. Hard work sometimes, but well worth it. These Turbo Buicks are just one of a kind and so great. Great cars aren't they? Imagine, power steering, power brakes, a/c, cruise control, a backseat, a trunk, rock and roll out of a great sound system and fast as the space shuttle! You can't ask anything more than that!
