Best way to change trans fluid w/o major mess?

Similar to the box idea, I bought a plastic tote. It's probably meant to go under a bed to hold wrapping paper or something like that. A few inches tall, nice and long, and just wide enough.

Use a mortar mixing pan. Available at any Home Depot or Lowe's

Remove a trans cooler line , slip a hose on it, and put the other end in a antifreeze jug to catch it. At Idle the fluid will be pumped out in about 30 seconds. Then make sure to let jug turn over and spill out.

The part in bold is extremely important. The transmission will not work if you don't kick over the bottle.
