Beware full throttles Hv front cover

Problems with Hv front cover....Check your work!

Anyone eles have issues with oil priming .Mine wasnt priming,so i found that 1 port was completely cast over. F-uckin pissed me off ,set me back big time. 3 hour off dicking around with it finally got all the casting out and the pump to prime. Beware what happened to quality control??????

I would think Mike didnt know this problem,Im sure once he knows that he check them before they are shippped.

Your buildin it, it's your responsability. Now had you bought an assembled front cover and it was messed up.......Differant story. Your last line fits perfect.

I'm sure it's not Full Throttle's fault either. They're probably Silver-Seal front covers... Correct?? In which case they need a little grinding here & there regardless.

Not only a "note to self" but a note to everyone... Expect nothing, double-check everything!!

I dont believe F.T sold you the T.cover intentionlly while being damage.(no need for bashing)..Simple mistake, Next time re-check everything when building an engine..

Agree. I am sure FT will get tis quality issue resolved with the MFG'er.

Trust no one, inspect everything first and foremost! Than inspect it again (This includes YOUR own work)! :biggrin:

Hey guys, ripped my hair out for days with a fresh rebuild on the stand trying to get primed, I pulled the front cover off at least 3 times ,new GM pump . I finally pulled my old cover out and compared the two, and the passage in the cover was not drilled out , must have used 2lbs. of vaseline,
3 oil pump gaskets, and alot of frustration.
This was a brand new (GM) cover in the box unopened i bought from the dealer, not an aftermarket cover !!!!!!! So much for thinking that always buying new is the best way to go ?

you could trace this problem back a good 15 years. its something you check on all new covers. most people modify the holes anyway to clean up casting flash.

i also bought one from mike and he said he wouldnt even put a new gm cover on with out cleaning it up. so i looked into mine and it also had one hole completly sealed over with casting.

Here are my 3 cents. The extra cent is for my frustration. I have installed aftermarket covers on 3 different motors and had a problem every time. Has nothing to do with Full Throttle, I have never bought a front cover from Mike.

1st one was casting flash completely obstructing the suction hole.
2nd one was a cam sensor hole that was off. Sensor would wedge against cam gear. Same issue found with other covers.
3rd one was a cover that cracked at the top crank sensor mount hole. Also duplicated by others. Several were the GM covers but felt it was because the FP block off plate was installed prior to the cover and would stick out further than the gasket surface bottoming out against the block.
Every time I found myself back with a new GM cover which is my preferred piece.

From my personal expreience you must exaine every cover as none of them seem to be a true bolt on and go. In addition, I have found the GM covers to have the tightest tolerances. All GM covers had great gear to wall cleance (very important), gear pocket depth and minimal core shift ( holes were centered ).

I believe Silver Seal would be second best. Although I have had some casting shift and porisity issues.

I did a search after all of this here and found out I am not the only one this has happened to. Gave me a reason to build the motor up just not at the time I wanted.

Take the setscrew out and shim up a short bolt, or find a short bolt and put a lockwasher on it.
Ive saved a few motors here locally doing just this!

I venture to say that Silver Seal and Pioneer covers are not the exact same casting. The Pioneer, from memory, had a P-XXXXXX something casting number in front on one of the ends by the oil pan. The Silver Seal cover has no markings on it that I recall. GM of course has the 255XXXXX number cast into the front.

Standing at the front of the motor, the AFTERMARKET front covers have this setscrew just to the right of the cam sensor hole///drivers side on the very top.
Stock cover does not have it.

I wasnt bashing mike at all sorry if it came off that way what im saying is beware off those front covers he supplies that brand has issues , hopefully to save someone the aggrevation of what i went through. full throttle was my suppler that why there name is mention!!!!

The important thing is to provide the feedback to FT. I am sure you either already have (personally), intend on doing so, or....... Mike has already read this thread. This way, FT can go BACK to the manufacturer and hold their feet to the fire.

Most businesses do not intentionally plan on sending out defective parts and I bet the QC Manager at the plant will not be happy when he hears from FT about repeat quality issues.

In the end, it will save LOTS of other people a LOT of aggravation ......... and Vaseline :tongue:
