Biggie Oil Filters.

OK, I haven't any access to cross reference materials, and I'd like to see someone post a list of cross reference filters that can be used with the biggie filter upgrade.

There seems to be some options.

I think (don't hold me to this) that the Purolator Pure One I used to run was a L30005, I honestly don't remember any more, but it was longer than any filters I can find today.
I have a Penzoil PZ-2 on there now, cuz it's all I could find. It's fatter, but shorter than the Pure One I used to run. I think I found a WIX equivalent to the PZ-2 today, it's number is:
51258

So, who really knows all the answers??
Need a biggie filter list of all popular brands, so us out here in the sticks can have alternatives

BTW Don't even think about adding Frams to the list. Not even I'm stupid enough to run Fram oil filters.

Dave the AC Ultraguard UPF24 filters can still be had via a GM dealer...contact one of the discount ones...they'll cost about $11 a piece after tax...little high but that's what a Mobil 1 costs and the anti-drainback on those doesn't work worth a crap..at least the few I tried...for me the AC's were the only ones with a good anti-drainback that didn't leak plus I like the black color...sorry not the cross ref list you wanted...just an option...

I recently installed the RJC Biggie oil filter adapter, and the instructions list the following filters:

AC PF24
NAPA 1258
Purilator L20003

And, (drum roll please)

Fram PH25, PH11

Your Wix number is correct Dave.

The standard Purolator L20033 Is the direct replacement for AC PF24. I been using it since the AC UPF24 are hard to find. The drainback valve has not failed on them for me yet. The can is also heavy like the AC's

Ya, I figured that. It's the "shorty" like the PZ-2, and the PF24's etc.

Nothing wrong, but I was wondering which are the longer varieties, like the L20003, which are harder than hen's teeth to find

So:

Penzoil PZ-2 (short)
WIX 51258 (short)
NAPA 1258 (short)
AC UPF24 (short)
AC PF24 (short)
Puralator L20003 (long)
Puralator L20033 (short)

So far so good. I had my hands on what I thought was the WIX equivalent to the 20003 but had no anti drain back valve, hmmmm????

Anybody remember the exact application for the L20003?? All the others I have listed above fit the 70-72 or so Buick Big Block (455).

You're kidding, right??

With all the studies that have been done, it's a very well documented fact (for a lot of years now), that Fram is just about the worst oil filter you can buy. Based on the amount and type of filter media inside the filter, and the construction materials used internally.

While Fram may be OK for air filters, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE OIL FILTERS on a car that you care about.

I think it's the Frams.

Hoping their latest PH-25 is better than the old ones.

Hawaiian Turbo, you're not the only one who was unaware of the apparent short comings of the Fram filters. I had never heard of that until I heard it here about a year ago. I don't have a link readily available that shows some of the testing that Dave alluded to, but I'm sure the archives here does.

Although I have used them in other cars I've had, & never had a problem, I won't use them anymore. There are simply just too many better filters available. Let me just add that I know that "not having a problem" in the past doesn't really mean anything. They do filter oil, just not nearly as well as others do.

Whan I ordered my "biggie" adapter, RJC reccomended the Fram PH11 as their first choice. Something about other filters clogging too easily because of really fine filter elements, therefor kicking in the anti-drainback valve.

I have always heard FRAM was a non-quality product too but:

After having a Pure One (when they made them) filter implode on me. The insides just crushed @ 60psi cold start up in the drive way......
A Wix filter puke a drain back valve (wouldn't hold any oil after shut down).........
And not being satisfied with the start up clatter of either AC or AC Gold......

I am now using a FRAM. I have to say it's working the best out of all of them. Can't believe it myself. Go figure. I don't know what it's actual filtering capabilities are compared to the rest but I change my oil pretty often. All of the above was with the Biggie conversion.

Here are some personal experiences I have with Fram. I have a friend that used to work for a company that produced paper for filter media. He told me on numerous occasions that Fram bought all of the poorer quality filter media that none of the other companies would buy. I'm not sure if it was for oil or air filters, so take it for what it's worth.

I've also got a friend with an '81 Z28 with a 598ci big block. He was having oil pressure problems at a race and thought his oil pump had gone out. He changed the oil filter (a Fram) and it fixed it right up. He replaced it with a Fram and ran for one race and his oil pressure had gone extremely low again. I think after this last Fram filter, he's going to be done with them.

There was a story published about 20 years ago about Fram making a 100K donation to the Consumer reports study facility. 3 months later there oil filters were rated over AC,Motorcraft,Hastings and Purolator. Wix uncovered the scam and pulled its filter from the comparison study.
Cut open a Fram filter it will speak for itself

You may want to look into a race type filter as well. Like say a Moroso. I believe a 455 Buick engine type would fit for the biggie filter. I cant get PureOnes anymore either. I'll see what I can find on the race filters, although I dont know if they have an anti drain back valve. That would cancell them. Maybe a K&N? Suppose to have good filtering and made strong........

Have you considered the Baldwin B9 filter as a "longer Biggie"? Baldwins are not sold at mass retailers, but are readily available from many big-rig truck places. I pay $4-5 ea, and buy a few at a time.

I've recently switched to Baldwin B35S (direct PF52 replacement) in my chevy truck, too.

I had a thread on Baldwin going, http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=37377&referrerid=3144 .

Baldwin wrote me that the B9 is rated at 100 psi continuous operating, 200 psi burst, and 250ºF continuous operating temperature.

The Purolator L30005 is a cross ref to the Baldwin B9, but the L30005 is scarce at the mass retailers -- it was out of stock at Pep Boys. The Baldwin has a much thicker and heavier metal shell than the Purolators, and its Drainback valve seems consistently very good.

re the Purolator L20003 -- my Baldwin catalog shows that cross referencing to just a bare filter catridge, the kind that fits into a separate housing. Catalog could be wrong - but have you actually used an L20003 before?
