Hey guys is this black smoke Im seeing the turbo or something else. The motor has 68,000 miles and runs great, so I thought it may be blowby or a turbo seal going bad. What do you guys think. Matt Wenning

its probably not the turbo because a bad turbo is more blueish color smoke, i'm not too sure though. Could it just be that your running to rich. Do you have a scan tool?

No I dont have a scan tool, I have a fuel air gauge and a knock gauge, The fuel air gauge reads normal, but not sure if it is correct or reliable.

I have an ATR adj fuel regulator and a walbro 340 fuel pump.

know your smoke colors

Sometimes its hard to tell, but make sure you know your smoke colors.

Blue smoke is indicative of burning oil. This could be due to a leaky turbo, or leaky valve seals or even bad pistons rings. In ICed GNs blue smoke is common because of the oil getting into the intercooler due to the crankcase vent tube on the passenger side valve cover.

White smoke is usually just condensation in the pipes burning off, or it means you're running really clean. But it could also mean your burning up your coolant due to a bad headgasket.

Black smoke means your using too much fuel for one reason or another. I noticed you said you have a walbro 340 and a adj fuel pressure regulator. what FP are you running at idle? until you have a scantool or at least a FP guage, id reccomend using the stock bosch regulator or the bosch 237 regulator, becuase they give u a fixed rate, while with the adjustable one, you just have to play it by ear.

i hope this was useful. And if you already knew this, maybe it will help someone else! :D ;)

Well, I was messing with ECMs when it got where it is now, the exhaust pipe has always been black as if running rich.

Will the computer have to readjust?? my MAF sensor is very loud now, it used to flutter and then go away, but now it constantly hisses.

Any help would be appreciated

Matt Wenning

I think that Im going to put back in the stock fuel regulator and see if it stops running rich.

I cleaned my throttle body up, hoping that it would help, but now it is idleing high, damn cant win.

Will I need a chip for it to read correctly??, just having problems and stuff.

P.S. does the 87 MAF use the same plug as the 85 MAF, it fit so I plugged it in, but I dont know if its reading correctly

As of now I have no chip, just the one in the ECM (the calpak chip I guess).

dont use an 87 MAf unless you have an 87 ECM. And you have a chip, its just the stock chip I'm sure. lower the fp, and it should stop smoking, but dont lower it enough to where you lose power. When does it blow smoke? when you get on it? or when you start it? or all the time?
