Are the ads that big a deal? I just scroll past them. If it keeps the board free I'm good. I have a direct link to the forums and didn't notice the home page. I did notice if I was in a thread in the New England section and hit the back arrow it sends me to the top of forums instead of New England area. Not a big deal, could just use the link in the header above.

Getting the thread back on topic, I managed to track down the code for the ads in between the first post and removed it for everyone who's logged in.

Then the forums comes up but with nothing on the far right. Also once from here and you choose something it looks normal BUT when you want to go back and look at another thread, You have to do all this over again...

I thought I was having the same issue but it was operator error. You need to click on the "Msg Board" tab at the top of the page and it will look and function as it did before.

Regarding the ads, if I didn't care for them BUT I am/was more than happy to put up with them since this board lets me use it for free.

The homepage is simply an index. You can go to the regular forum like you mentioned above.

What I wanted to do was get us in a position to where the "Featured Members" could be easily updated without the need for constant html editing to add cars. Thats the main reason it hasnt been updated.

Im tracking stats on what resolution, browser, etc people are running and there just arent very many people running less than 1024x768. From my stats gathering, only about 5% of users since I started tracking stats run 800x600.

Im going to see if I can figure out a way to make the homepage work in the lower resolutions. Its kind of like the floppys tho.. at some point you just have to make a clean break.

Were not alone! There has been several people call me about the very same issue and some of them didn't even see a forum spot. Kind of hard to find with this new layout.

The main page, (portal to the forums) is boring, poorly laid out and not real eye catchy. Servbl had come up with some cool designs in a thread a year or so ago...yall should get back with him about a killer front design, as it looks right now the main portal looks like a mess, maybe stick some flamingos in the yard.

The problem with doing something like that is that the pages arent dynamic, unless the guy is a vBulletin coder.. You can have a really nice flashy homepage but then when you want to update it, it takes a bunch of editing to make it happen.

Most forums use VBAdvanced. I like VBA, its a good, solid portal. Its what we use on T6P. Its what all the forums that the company I work part time for use. I wanted something different for here tho. The portal we ended up using here, Ive never seen anyone use anywhere else. The author was very helpful in helping me get it set up like we wanted and Im happy with it.

A flashy homepage would have been cool but it's just so much of a PITA to setup and maintain.

I removed the ad after the first post.

We jumped 2 versions in the vBulletin family. Starting with 3.8, they added provisions for Google Ads. The version we were running previously, 3.6, did not have the feature and the ads were hard coded in. Just had to go through and disable them where we didnt want them.

I would rather see the board owners generate money this way than restricting what people can post. This thing isn't free by any means.


Keep the software version up to date!!!!!!! It gets exploited and compromised more than most software products on the internet.

Lighten up everyone, it was still pretty fast with the ads although between the posts kinda sucked.

If it works with AOL dialup, the upgrades couldn't have been too bad.

I think everyone on the front page should still have to own their cars and be relevent to the board, make a nice "history" section or history page for all the old "stories" as they are now historical in nature.

I link right to the forums from my favorites it's easy.

I don't have a problem with the ads. It's your board, do as you wish.

However, it seems y'all could act your age. It's really disheartening to come here and read about what I enjoy and see this kind of crap.

Here's the bottom line.

This board, in comparison to other boards has nothing for ads. It pisses me off to no end when people come on here crying about the horror of ads. It costs you nothing to use this board. I know how much the server costs every month. It aint cheap. Its got to be paid for somehow. I know how much software packages cost, I know how much renewals, addons, etc cost. And all the while, Shane has never asked any of the users for a dime.

Bruce might as well have been running this board on a Commodore 64. Thats why it was slow, thats why the search didnt work and it costs money to upgrade the software, thats why it was running an ancient version of vBulletin. Im not dissing Bruce because he's not a tech guy, his tech guys just gave him him either bad advice or no advice.

We've upgraded the server 3 times since Shane has owned the forum. Look down at the bottom at that "Big Boards" button. That tracks the largest online forums on the interweb and TurboBuick has almost broken into the top 1000. They index about 2000 forums so we're right in the middle. You have to have 500,000 posts to even be considered.

All Im saying is any board this size with the revenue potential this board has, if anyone else owned it, would be loaded to the gills with ads, probably have a premium membership option for $39 a year and cost vendors WAY more than what theyre paying now. This board makes enough to get by with the ads and vendor fees.. No one is getting rich but people still want to complain about a single ad.

I use to run a board and I know it isn't easy. However you guys can't come on here and act like this and then turn around and moderate. You lose credibility. I know you probably know this and let your emotions get you like the rest of us sometimes, but you have to try harder. I'd say a vast majority of the posters don't come here for that.

I know one thing you might want to think about is something they try at 1965-1973 Classic Mustangs - Vintage Mustang.com Users can donate money to the board and get a bronze, silver, or gold status next to their name and receive special posting privileges such as embedded Youtube links etc.
