They run the blow off valves to keep the compressor nut from loosening. Its simply not needed in 99% of applications with an automatic. It wont hurt running one but there are other things to spend money on that are more wise in almost all instances. Ive run everything from stock up to T72 at 30 psi with no blow off and never had a thrust problem, broken turbine, or loose compressor nut. Ive seen loose compressor nuts on some mid frames though. The exhaust wheel has to much inertia in those applications and the back flow unscrews the compressor nut.
ive also heard with big turbos if you dont run a blowoff valve it can bend the blades in your throttle body or blow through carb with high boost.
