What is a must do for a 200-4r in order to have a good while with it if my engine is a 78 chevy lm1 and I have some 3:73's in the rear although my axles are 7.5's.
I came acroos it like thank with a 350 trans but the 350 sounds like its dragging and it burns gas on the hwy

2004R necessities...

Helloand welcome to the boards! There are several builders on the site, a few are vendors. I'm not advocating one over the other, if you read the various post, they will do that to each other, at least one will probably have something negative to say about this (my) posting to you, but take that with a grain of salt, read-on and make an informed decision. PTS Extreme has a "list" with very detailed explanations of specific upgrades for different levels of performance, CK Performance offers a very helpful repair/overhaul manual should you want to tackle the overhaul yourself. There are a few others that are also very knowledgeable. Your power level and driving habits are the determining factors. Basics I would recommend are as follows; hardened stator, hardened forward drum, hardened pump rings, .500 boost valve, hardened oversized band anchor pin, Kevlar or Carbon Fiber band, NEW thrust bearings, there is a GM/AC Delco replacement for the rear thrust washer, changing it to a Torrington bearing and a shift/shift improver kit (not an off the shelf kit from your local chain autoparts store) there are several to choose from; I currently have a Level 10 kit in mine that works fine, and usually in the past have used Gil Younger kits (I believe he holds the rights to the name "Shift Kit". Again, it depends of power and driving conditions. If you are a little more specific, I'm sure several of the competent builders on this site will chime in with recommendations, just don't be in a hurry and read! Good luck, John.;)

I just want it to be able have a strong take off when I'm ready to but mainly I'm a cruiser and what for it to be reliable.

Billet forward drum
Dual feed the directs (dont try this without a billet forward drum)
Good shift kit
Pump built i.e./some of which are .555 boost valve, trans go high rev pump rings and spring, etc
Good frictions

That will run 12's high 11's pretty well in a 3600 lb vehicle IMO

I would stay away from a Kevlar Band, use Alto Wide Red band or even better Carbon band.

Any 200-4r from a gas powered car will work fine with a recalibration for that application. I'd search for a kz code trans and add about a gram to the governor to drop the Wot shift points. A good stock core with the recalibration will work great. I'd go with more than 3.73 gears. You will drop 33 percent in od.
