Hey guys, i need to put a new cam in my 86 GN and do't know really what i'm looking for. I've got TE-44 (soon to be te45a), ported heads, pte front mount, and all the other goodies. i had a 210/205 in there last time and was happy but i wan't something that will pull like crazy on the top and be pretty agressive. I want to got 10.50's. Is 218/218 what i want?

Thanks,
Craig

Depends on what range you're operating the car in.
How many rpm's do you plan to take it to? What do the heads flow at .500 lift? Are you willing to sacrifice a little responsiveness down low?
As we all know, your ET is going to rely heavily on your 60' times, so, you certainly don't want to go too large and give up the bottom end thrust. I remain with the theory that you don't need a huge cam in our cars, and have found mine to run better with a medium-sized, semi-conservative cam, as opposed to a big honker. I've also stuck with split pattern grinds, per the advice of my mentor who has studied cam design for 20+ years.

Although, there are plenty of folks running exceptionally well with single pattern grinds. I think your suggestion of the 218/218 is a notable choice, as long as it fits the parameters you're seeking.

All in all, you need to determine the factors listed in the beginning of my rant, and design a cam around those specs. Remember, it's all about area under the umbrella. You're obviously going to be operating between 3500 and ????

By all means, I don't claim to be an expert on this cam though, and hopefully someone else who has used it will respond. I did notice that you're running 50's injectors, which will most likely not support your goals either. Just keep that in mind too.

My 224*/224* did not seem to give up any low end - did not seem to help the top end either.

I am going to try something closer to my first cam (not the real first - that was stock) it was a Schneider cam something like 210/214??? it has been a long time. Car ran great, cars runs fine with the big one and sounds great too but I am not sure I need it or if it really helping. I would like to find a cam with lift in the .5 range

214/224 is .472 Intake and .496 Exhaust. Frank Garbacz can get this for you if you're interested.
