Here's the deal. I have a really good job with excellent pay and benefits, but...

I'm miserable. I'm completely bored with it (10 yrs of shift work has me feeling REALLY old) and would like to do something else, even if it's only part time. I've dabbled in internet car sales (eBay) with success and may try to expand on that.

Any other suggestions? It doesn't even have to be something that would allow me to quit my current job but maybe something enjoyable that would be a good supplemental income.

Automotive related fields are a plus, obviously!

dog training!!!!!!! training personal protection dogs is fun and relieves alot of stress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you considered paintless dent repair. My cousin does it and makes some decent coin. He sets his own hours and enjoys doing it. It also comes in handy for his personal vehicles. The school and tools are a tad pricey, but pay for themselves real quick, and you would be amazed at what he can do to dents and dings. Ive seen him take a hail damaged car and fix it to where you cant find one flaw.

Paintless dent removal...hmmm....

Got a real good friend who was supposed to get into that a year or so ago but don't know what became of it. I'll check into that.

Maybe I can get his tools cheap!

Keith, thanks for the tip but dogs aren't my thing.

A fellow syclone owner was at the nats in BG a few years ago doing the paintless dent repair so I got to watch how it was done. Pretty neat stuff and he prolly did a half dozen or so Buicks while I looked over his shoulder.

IMO if you can make dent dissapear on a black car then just about anything else should be a cake walk. Being a former body man/painter that is REALLY hard to impress I give the quality he was doing a 9 out of 10. I could still pick out slight irregularities here and there but a non trained eye would never see it.

My point is check into it as once you got the word out, so to speak, the income potential could be pretty decent IMO.

Anything to do with computers. It might take you going back to school. Having certifications does not go very far these days.

If you want to get stupid into money, porn is the way to go. As much as it sucks, the majority of the net is porn.

I've got a buddy (who just happens to own a GNX) that has his own computer business that has done very well. He works for businesses mostly setting up servers and networks. I'm sure he'd help me get started if I asked him. Maybe he'd be interested in expanding his business in my direction (we live about 60 miles apart and he has nothing in this area).

I like porn as much as the next guy, but couldn't get into it myself (selling it or making it;) )! Are they really making that much money from these websites? I did want to open a top-notch "Gentleman's Club" when they legalized gambling here 10 years ago but they've been outlawed here.

I should've opened a pawn shop when the casinos opened. I'd be retired now!

I recommend you invest in Lots and Houses.

Lots of booze and ho houses:D

Heard that joke once and always wanted to use it!
Best thing to do is find something you are good at and enjoy doing, and market it. It is hard to do something you have no experience at and make money. If you are a people person, go into sales. If you are good with your hands, become certified in some type of repair and open your own shop. If you know alot about a certain type of industry, try and consult. Just a few ideas.

Thanks for all of the replies, guys! Any others?

This "mid-life crisis" at 38 is driving me crazy! I guess I've reached a point in my life where I finally realize that life's too short to go through it doing things you don't want to do just for the "almighty dollar".

Of course, I've always heard that you've never been TRULY MISERABLE until you've owned you're own business!;)

Anything to do with sex and the net.Sure fire money maker when you combine the 2.

Pimping! I'm kidding of course. I was an accountant for 6 years, but was a car not for almost 20. I quit my job went to an automotive tech school in Manhattan and then 4 months at the Mercedes Benz ELITE Program in Orlando Florida.

Working at a Mercedes Dealer and driving almost $1 million dollars worth of MB cars a week was wild. I drove all of the AMG models and toms of SL500s. I decided to leave after they would not promote me to service writer because their old school thinking. Basically, waiting in line behind 10 other people with more time, but less knowledge. The pay was excellent and several techs made over 6 figures and the average in the shop approached 80K.

Since, I assume, you work on the coast, you could work at the docks.

A friend of mine works at the Oakland docks at night, and makes 2700$ a week. He gets paid if he goes over there, and there isnt even work :), Maybe that might be something you would look into? The only downfall, is the odd hours, and the lack-luster sleep if you have a job during the day.

Thanks for the suggestion marleyskater, but I work shift work already (on the dock at ChevronTexaco refinery) so I'm looking for something where I can set my own hours or at least stop living like a vampire.

Retirement, for sure.

Your former employer and Joe Taxpayer pay you to drink coffee, read the morning paper, go for a jog, play golf, drive in the left lane at 20 MPH under the speed limit during rush hour in a red Viper, and clog up every restaurant from Maine to California when the working man is trying to eat. Plus, everything is discounted or free. And you get full medical, of course.

Cool!!!

Having been a business owner since graduating college I might suggest this:

If you have to look to others for a business that you would like to get into, you may want to stay away from that business. You MUST find something that YOU enjoy. When I got started, I thought I'd have weekends off, work partial days etc. yea right. Try 100+ hour weeks, no time for lunch, no vacations, getting pulled in 5 directions at once, etc. My suggestion is find something you like to do.

And DO NOT do it for the $$$$. If your good, the $$$ will come with no problem.

Joe

Thanks, Joe. I've got some ideas of my own but thought I'd try to get some input from others. What I was hoping to hear was from those who've bought franchises, started their business from scratch or maybe knew of a good one that I'd overlooked.

I've got one that I'm pretty sure is a winner, it's just tough to take that leap from the security that I have now!

Money's not the MOST important thing but it's in the top two!

hay sinister, i'm an elevator mech and the pay is excellent, don't know the area you live in but check www.iuec.com a little down you'll see iuec#71 thats my local, it's the strongest union there is to me, the pay is great but the job is very dangerous ,but i guess all jobs are to a certin degree

Thanks for the suggestion no-nos, but 10 years of "babysitting a bomb" has me wanting something a little less life-threatening!
