Can I jack up the engine by the balancer?

I want to change my motor mount soon (HRpartsNstuff ), but I'm worried that jacking up the engine by the oil pan will cause the gasket to leak. The engine is all original and it's a 14 bolt pan, so it doesn't have those nice dimples on it. (I don't have an engine hoist.)

Someone suggested jacking it up using a floor jack and a peice of wood under the balancer. Will this be OK?

I wouldn't.Your crank may not like it.Stick with the pan.

I wouldn't do that. Hard on the crank snout...hard on the balancer....and an invitation for (more) front seal leaks.

Use a piece of wood across the oil pan to spread the load and crank it up carefully.

Use a board across the oil pan, or attach a cherry picker/hoist to the top of the engine.
