Can the ECM detect reverse gear?

Just wondering, since my car likes to build boost when put in reverse and I want to make sure the ECM is not responsible.

As far as I know it only knows Park/neutral, 3rd and 4th.

It's because reverse has so much gear multiplication, the engine revs quicker

The ecm knows neutral (park), then in gear (any), and then 3 and 4th.
