Can the LT1 MAF be used WITHOUT the translator?

Nope, its not even close. The Translator has to be used.

In an emergency, some cars will actually drive half way decent when unplugging the maf, since there are some default values that are plugged in. Might give that shot, but I'm not guaranteeing anything. :)

I drove my car to work for a week with No MAF.

I don't recommend it however. Very difficult to do and a bit dangerous.

Broke down and bought an Echlin MAF while waiting for a NOS stocker to arrive.

That one actually worked okay.

LS1's require the translator box to work.

Sort of like trying to talk in English to someone on the phone who only knows Japanese. You just aren't going to understand one another. Hence the name, Translator.:) The Buick computer just isn't going to understand what the Chevy MAF is trying to tell it.
