I've loosened the 4 bolts that hold my speedo cluster in, now it still doesn't move. People say to push the speedo cable from the rear to give it enoug room. Well A. theres nowhere near enough cable to give the cluster any slack, and B. even if it didn't have any speedo cable attached to it, there still isn't enough room between the top of the dash pad and the steering column itself to fit. It appears as if I have to drop the steering column too. Is this right?

If there is not enough slack, unhook the speedometer cable from the Trans (driver side) and push it in to the grommet at the Firewall. That should give you enough slack to pull cluster out a bit and unhook the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer.

You do not have to drop steering column. Tilt steering wheel down and maneuver it out.

The speedo connection by the driver's side is stuck tighter than a fist full of superglue. Can't get it loose. And even if I did the cluster will not come out. It's stuck :( Any tricks?

Take the screws out of the big plastic peice behind the cluster that it mounts in it and it will give u slack to get to the harness. Also push the Speedo cable from under the hood a little to give I slack there too. Thats how I done mine the other day

I bet the wiring for the Boost/Tach gauge is hung up in the wiring in back of the dash! Just went through this. Take the 2 screws out that hold the boost/tach
gauge in and see if that frees up some slack. You need to yank on the wires to the gauge to get to the connector it is plugged in to. The wires are like
10" long before it plugs in to the connector behind the dash.

If factory like mine the harness was through other wire and u could not pull without taking the backing loose.

It won't go. It's stuck, and I'm not sure how you guys got in there from under the dash. The steering column's RIGHT in the way. No room whatsoever.

Are you sure you have all the screws out?

Either that or the VSS wire is snagged. Dropping the column will give you a little more working room but the whole support bracket is right there anyway.

Removing the dash surround all (7mm head screws) will allow you to see from the top down what is going on.

Bring the hammer out. There's only one way about this.

sounds like the wires are pulling it in tight. Remove the bottom piece under the steering wheel. The one that has the A/C vent for your Crotch. Get up under there and look at the wires going to cluster.

Got it all loosened. Can't unplug the little 3 wire harness that stuck to the back of the speedometer right next to the speedo cable. Can't get the cable loose either :(

They are a pain to remove. Focus on the shortest harness/cable to give yourself some room. The speedo cable unhooks from the bottom.

Definitely remove they grey padded surround.

That is the VSS (red green black) it is actually screwed in with a 5.5mm (IIRC) bolt.

Confirmed it 5.5 mm or a 7/32 socket will work.......Are you pulling the cable retention tang back towards you when trying to loosen the cable??

I see that now lol. Finally got it. MAN, this removal was NOWHERE NEAR as easy as people on here make it seem. Nowhere did they say the VSS was screwed in lol. And without taking thirty minutes to unplug the boost gauge, this cluster was going NOWHERE. MAN that was a pain. Wow. I'd rather have a root canal than doing this again. Holy ++++.

Don't forget about the screw holding the harness!!! Sorry though u could see or feel it!! ;):confused:
