I was under power and the car fell on its face.Engine became choppy. I lost almost all power and my check engine light came on. I saw smoke comming out of the back of the car. It then died. I restarted and limped it home. I checked my scanmaster and it said M.A.L # 33.
I checked my scanmaster paperwork and it said the tyical case was Bad Mass Airflow Sensor. Would a bad M.A.F cause This....
Please Help with advise.

Sounds believeable to me.

IMHO, if you are still running stock, get a newer LS1 style MAF meter and a translator. The stock style MAF meters are pretty much cr@p on the replacement ones..... and GM discontinued them years ago.

I just don't want to throw parts at it. I know the scamaster says M.A.F . . Code # 33 but can it be something else? I don't want to buy a M.A.F and find out its a blown turbo or something . I don't know anybody around here who has a G.N. who's maf I can borrow. Anybody in Staten Island N.Y with a M.A.F that I can Try. could use the help. Thanks

I can send you the MAF I had on my car for testing if you want... I upgraded to a translator as I got a great deal but theres nothing wrong with my MAF... you can pay shipping to you and then back to me if that's something you wanna do.. Try tapping the maf or cleaning it or maybe someone closer to you can let you borrow one... and a bad maf can cause all kinds of problems as the ecm uses the signal from the maf to control fueling.... anyways, let me know if you need my MAF...

Nicky,

I have a spare MAF if you need swap and test. I am in Staten Island also. My suggestion is to unplug it, and see if it runs significantly smoother and better than with it plugged in. If so...all signs point to bad MAF.

I had one fail on me years ago, and experienced the same choppy surging and popping as you describe. Email me direct if you want to try a known good one.

Thanks
Chris

You guys are all great. I really love the Turbo Buick comunity. I Genuinely appreciate the help.

Guys, thanks for all the help. I changed out the old M.A.F for a rebuilt one from Kirban. Real nice guy that Kirban.I spoke with him on the phone. Trying to stick with the origonal look.
Soon as I installed it my check engine light went out and in a few seconds the motor smoothed out. Runs great. Took it out for a long drive ...... Enjoyed myself. Thanks for all the great advise guys. Hope to return the favor.
