I got a buddy who's looking to buy an open 16 or 18' car trailer.
Most of the ones he finds have no brakes on them.
Is that ok or a bad thing?

I thought most trailers have brakes, but a lot of these are utility type trailers (with sides/rails).

Your thoughts?

DO not buy a utility trailer to use as a car hauler.
Get a dedicated car hauler, and YES, you need brakes.

Newer trailers have brakes on both axels!!! Also newer trailers have break away boxes in case the trailer comes disconnected from the truck the brakes will get activated to stop the trailer,

Not only are brakes a must, but in something like 35 states you must have brakes on BOTH axles. You are probably unlikely to get caught, but you never know. Why take the chance with your vehicles or the law?

As mentioned you definately want a tanden trailer with brakes.

In most states it is a law usually comes into affect on gross weight over 3500lbs.

Having trailered over 300 plus turbo regals, I have done this with 2 trailers.

One of the best values for the buck is econo trailer made in western, pa come in different lengths 16-18 etc....I buy the 16 foot ones....

Very light weight....and easy to move around.

If your buddy has long term trailer plans and more money to spend go with an aluminum trailer.

Our state for example requires trailers of this size to also be inspected yearly.

Good advice there Dennis. that is the trailer I have. They are super easy to deal with and even delivered the trailer to my door. There are some new DOT regulations coming out comcerning trailering. In PA both axles must have electric brakes. Surge brakes used to be leagal for boats, not sure anymore. There have been many accidents involving trailers in recent years. Those accidents are the result of people not following the laws and guidelines. The laws have changed and will change to "crack down" on the bad guy's. The issue of trailering is often taken for granted, but it is a serious matter, many things can go wrong. The result can be devastating, not just in life, but you can destroy a car quickly too.
