I need some advice on this please: when checking this clearance do I use a dial indicator on the output shaft (inside) and jack up the output shaft or do I jack up the output shaft and measure using feeler gage btw snap ring and steel shim?

I ask cause I get .069" measuring with dial indicator and roughly .020" with feeler. I am wondering if maybe I am jacking up output shaft too much but shoudn't they be the same anyway?

Need help.

?

The video I have shows jacking up the tail shaft and using a feeler gage. Do you have a video? If not maybe I could be of some help in that area.

forget that method.build it all up on the table from the output shaft to the snap ring that holds the front carrier in and insert a feeler gage in between the snap ring and the selectivr washer.ths will be your rear end play, adjust accordingly.

Thanks Lee and Chris.

Lee, does your video say how much to jack the shaft?

Chris, I will try using your method but I would still like to figure out the difference.

Yes

I run the screw up until it stops. Its been a while since I watched the video. Its fool proof!!!

Yep, that works, thanks.

Another thing, do you know if I have to remove the low/reverse cup seal in order to remove low/reverse clutch? The book says to remove but not sure if it is to get the clutch out or just for reasons of replacement. Thanks Lee

cup lug

If the seal is driven in as it should be--it will be pressing against the low and reverse clutch housing --which has to come out before you can get to the low and reverse clutches. I use a ground down easy-out. You can probably get the low and reverse housing out--but putting it back in could prove to be diffilcult. I would worry about the cup sealing as it has a rubber business end on it.

That's what I figured Lee, so I removed it first. Used a cutoff #4 easy out, worked good too.

Thanks again!!
