Code 42 in the morning then code 51 in the afternoon can you say Gremlins?

On my way to Cecil yesterday and code 42 pops up. i turn the car off and turn it back on and Code 42 is gone.
i drive 180 miles to Cecil and life is good.
I leave Cecil get on the Turnpike and in between exit 2 and 3 the car starts to bug out SES light starts doing a faint fast flash the car feels like crap. I make it to the shoulder and the car dies.
I pull the chip out and put it back in and still crap. i then pull out the calpak and put back in and start the car and in runs great all the way home. WTF.
ECM going south?

It's a possible it might be the ECM or it could be the chip, look into this "Malfunction Codes Reference"

Do you know anyone that might have an extra chip or ECM to see which one is the faulty one?

I had a code 42 the other day with in my case was a voltage drop for more then 2.2 seconds and my alternator went out 1/2 hour later causing a voltage drop to 9 volts car backfired and stalled mite check your voltages

Have you check your voltage?
Do you know if someone has a spare chip or ECM to eliminate those components?

Mine was easy the alternator quit working so it set the code with the voltage drop I would check output with a volt Meter make sure it putting out good charge your's may not even be related but I'm pretty sure one of the causes for code 42 is a voltage drop for over 2 seconds

after the code 42 i drove over 180 miles and the voltage was good.
when i got the code 51 the voltage was also good.

I've often told my self if I get a extra 1,000 dollars laying around I would replace all the wiring with new wiring harnesses my car came from chandler az I know how brutal the heat can be on plastic and parts I have resoldier new connector on ever sensor and connector on the car (connector latches were all broke)i chased electric gremlins for the first year or two finely ran out of things to replace lol my next move will be new harnesses nature of the beast I guess

It might be possible after the engine is fully warm and hot the CalPak and/or ignition module is breaking down.
Check and start to see you has the best replacement since it's already 25+ years old.

Sounds like possible connection problem with the chip.

I would remove the chip, pry up the contacts in the chip socket and re install.

i have never seen new calpaks for sale??
it didn't feel like ignition failure

I will give this a shot
The chip is BRAND NEW a few days old, the CalPak is OE i guess.

check all sockets for any corrosion, or temporary see if can get another ECM unit.
