Hey guys, I think my coil pack in my 85 GN might be going bad, so I was thinking of replacing it, but Im not sure where to go to find a replacement. Any suggestions?

Maybe someone can answer me this. Is there a way to test the coilpack to determing if it is going. and if so How? also what are the symptoms of a bad coilpack?

Upgrade to the 86-87? Doing that Id have to upgrade the computer and such as well correct? I still dont know where to get anything though...

Changing from 84/85 electronics to 86/87 electronics

Step by step info to convert your 84/85 ECM to 86/87 style here

Step by step info to convert your 84/85 ignition module to 86/87 style here

You can test your coil with a Casper's coil tester (CCCI Ignition Simulator on this page

:)

hey gnsucka i know it sucks when the coil pack goes bad i had that same problem wit mine so i didnt have the money to upgrade to the 86/87 which is ur best bet from all the reasearcha nd experience these guys have had and done but what i did i went on ebay and got me one that a guy was parting out his 85 GN and sold me the coil pack for 60 bucks and like he said it was in a goodrunning engine and order so i bought and im back to normal and i have seen a couple in the past month that have been in auction original 84/85 coil pack and modules but now that i have money coming my way im gonna upgrade now didnt do it at that time becuz i was broke, but i still got my moneys worth wit a good used one car running good again

If you're looking to only replace the coilpack and not the module, buy the 87 style. It's a direct plug in to the 84 module. Only problem is it's physically smaller than the 84 coil so if you are good at fabricating things, you could make an adaptor to make it bolt up or Caspers sells an adaptor pretty cheap. When I was really broke for a few months I ran mine with the 87 coil on the 84 module held down with black zipties. Pretty ghetto looking but it got me to work and back.

I see you're from Santa Clarita. If you're ever in my area, I have 3 hotair coils you could try for diagnosis.

Hmm....alright, thanks for all the usefull information guys. I am curious though, is it really hard to convert over to the 86-87 setup?
