Re: Cold Air? Ram Air?

NEVER heard anyone call the open filter in the engine compartment a "cold air kit" as Teddie suggests.

I have.

I went to this car club meeting that was mainly ricers. Nobody would race, but a guy with a Z28 said he'd race me. He said he had a Camaro with a "Corvette" engine in it (Actually, it was a '95 Z28 with a stock LT1). So when I agreed, he changed his mind and accused me of not being stock (especially since others in his group were telling him he'd get spanked). So I popped my hood and challenged anybody to show me what was not stock.

I have an open K&N under the hood, so these Horsepower-TV-watching choads pointed at it and said it was a "cold-air intake".

Meanwhile, I'm stillll thinkin'...

Hey, I'd bet that if I really did have a cold-air inlet, those saps would probably never even notice it. After all, the hose goes out through that stock hole behind the headlight and they wouldn't even be able to see the filter. And, I just might get some real benfit of having the filter located in that area. Hmmmm....

So here I am, on turbobuick.com trying to get more info about them. The Big Mouth kit seems attractive. Maybe I'll go with it.

BOOSTED BUG

you are right boosted but the atr 14" filter and canister does work great over a stock or other claimed col air kits . i had the atr cold ait kit and it is awsome and it does keep a low profile appearence. but the one thing i have to say is nothing looks more BAD A$$ than a 4" chrome or polished aluminum pipe going in to the turbo. the Big Mouth kit looks as great as it's function performs

Is there any worry about getting mud, water, or road dirt all over the filter with it hanging under there? That's what I would be concerned with. Constantly having to clean the filter.

This is my main concern with the big mouth kit. Does anyone have actual pics of how low it hangs? I live in south florida, and we have lots of rain here and my car is a daily driver, so my main concern would be that it does not suck up water if I have to go threw a puddle.

kit length

the filter come flush with the very bottem of the black air dam that bolts to the bottom of the front fender you can just barely see the end on the filter when you bend over to look underneath the car. it fits very well. and i've had NO PROBLEMS with water entering of excessive dirt build up. it a great design. :)

Well, it seems the "Big Mouth" is the ticket. I have one that came on the car I bought. I'll sell for half price, what ever that is plus shipping.

Whew.. that's still awfully low though. Could just use a shorter length filter with the same 4" big mouth on it, couldnt ya? Or do they make one? If not, I guess I could live with it. Sounds to me like a damn nice cold-air kit. I'm interested in dropping those MAT temps a little. Especially come summer time, when the engine runs hotter.

Yea i bet it looks killer...I just ordered the stock turbo shroud for my car and I am going to have to cut it so it will fit over the 3 " down pipe....I want it to look as stock as possible...Now what can I do to hide the huge front mount?

Oh well another problem for another day.

boostedbug

i have a Presion front mount intercooler and it is big in the grill, and to be honest it doesn't hide well since it is plain aluminum. to be honest the only way to make it less noticeable is to paint is black but i don't know if that will reduce and cooling capibilities. i plan on just painting the side tanks on mine because it sticks out like a sore thumb, but i don't want to paint the fins.

There are coatings to aid in heat transfer. My recommended place is:

It would seem to me the idea would be to have a transfer coat on the intercooler inlet side and the core where the air is hotter than ambient and then have a heat barrier on the outlet pipes going into the hotter engine compartment.
